Okay to use Valvoline 5w40 MST oil?

Not wanting a heated argument. But I have roughly 30 quarts of Valvoline left I was going to use on my LT1. Bought it on sale. Will it be okay to run this on my LT4 on the street then track the car with Mobil 1 15W50? I hate switching brands of oil for some reason.

I will go to Mobil 1 only after the Valvoline is gone.

It’s dexos 2 so ur good. You can even use on track. It’s basically the same as M1 ESP 5W-40.

yep...Valvoline MST 5w40 is Dexos 2 approved and acceptable for our ZL1s. The Mobil 1 0w40 ESP is the "new" standard for the LT4. I saw no difference between the 2 at VIR concerning oil temps or consumption. So, I feel confident using either and the Valvoline MST 5w40 is quite a bit cheaper. At NAPA they have it for less than $6 a qt!

I like to stick with one oil manufacturer. Or does it matter.

I thought the 1LE had to have mobile 15w50 for the track even though I dont understand why when the regular zl1 can use 0w40 and 5w40. Same engine.

"For the ZL1 1LE, 15W-50 is the required track oil due to the increased lateral acceleration capability of the vehicle. It has enough of a grip capacity increase above all the other models that the added protection from 15W-50 is needed. The thicker 50 weight viscosity helps with oil pan drawdown when the oil gets hot on the track and reduces risk of pressure dropouts. For the ZL1, 15w-50 will add protection but is not required, as the 0w-40 was tested and provides adequate protection in a track environment.

Since Mobil 1 15w50 is not Dexos-certified, it is not recommended for long-term street driving use. Follow the Owner’s Manual and switch back to the 0W-40 Dexos-certified oil after your track session is over and you are back to street use.
With regard to the new Mobil 1 0W-40 ESP Dexos 2 oil, it is an acceptable oil for both the street and track, for the SS, SS 1LE, and the ZL1 due to having less aeration. However, it is not recommended for tracking your ZL1 1LE."

Per Al Oppenheiser.

Valvoline MST (Dexos) is fine for street application.

I'm running this on the street and track. My Blackstone Labs oil reports have been almost perfect with the Fram XG10060.

I called my dealer today about Mobil 1 0w40. They said it was 15 dollars a quart and it's on back order. Might take months to get in. Lol.

I will stick with the valvoline 5w40 then track with Mobil 15w50 so GM cant say I did something wrong incase I have problems. Thanks.

Valvoline MST 5W40 is fine for the track. See above and it is in the high performance supplement.

5W-40 valvoline is not the same as the new 0W-40 mobil 1. There is a reason they tell you to switch back to 5W-30 in the manual after a track day. 5W-40 is not as catalytic converter friendly. There is a reason they developed a whole new oil and the advice in the owner’s manual.

Correct me if I am wrong but it's okay for the standard ZL1 but the ZLE they say only 15w50 for track.

The way I interpret the manual 5w40 valvoline is okay to leave in after the track. And you are correct it is harder on the cats.

The engines are identical. 1.39 Max G per the PDR.
