Duramax or Super Duty?
I'm in the market for a used diesel. Anywhere from $30k - $40k
I'll be towing a pretty big boat every now and then and estimate that it will be roughly 10k pounds. Figured why not get a diesel and make it easier. That being said, not sure what to do. I love the Duramax, best sounding diesel in my opinion, but you can't discount the Scorpion 6.7 Powerstroke. So... in a dilemma here, I don't like the CP4 (fuel injector?) problem that the LML diesels are known to have, and so far with the powerstroke, people complain that the turbos can get too hot and self destruct (yikes). Don't know what to do? Can anyone offer any insight? Or should I just get myself a gasser and call it a day? |

Could never keep a Cummins working in any of the buses we had in college.

I work in a Chevy/Ford combined shop. My personal opinion is definitely a Duramax. I have repaired complete high pressure fuel systems on about 3 in 12 years. I have replaced 2 turbos. I have replaced around 20 or so indirect fuel injectors (the exhaust fuel injector for the dpf) multiple exhaust sensors. And recently I am seeing quite a few (changed 3 this year) of the egr cooler bypass valves. All of those, aside from the indirect injector, are very expensive. But in the 3 years I have been in the combined shop I have seen in the neighborhood of 6-7 complete engines on the various forms of the Super Duty. Year absolutely matters on which engines are prone to which problems. But my opinion all years of Duramax are the better of the two choices, regardless of year on the Super Duty. 10K trailer weight, you're going to want a diesel. I have a 17 2500hd 6.0L, tow package, the works. I probably could tow to the weight rating of 13,900 lbs but my 8-9k lb camper loaded is about as much as I pull. I don't live in the flat lands, I live in very steep mountains and can get the temps up pretty good pulling below the rating still.

I know too many people that had ford diesel problems. Overrated big time. Go with Chevy or Dodge.

Currently I own a Duramax my previous truck was a Cummins. I had the Cummins for 19 years. I'm a huge Cummins fan if you are looking for something a few years old. Remember the Cummins was developed as a commercial engine that was put in many different platforms. The Duramax and Powerstroke were developed as light truck engines. Just open the hood on any of them and decide which looks easier to work on! Also Cummins can be tuned to insane power! I saw on that was making over 100psi of boost. Try that with the others.

FWIW, I am a driver for a Diesel repair and performance shop. I have heard the owner advise quite a few people that were looking for a used pickup as to what they should look for.
He tells them that with both Ford and Dodge (RAM), go with a 2015 or newer, and with a Duramax, look for a clean 2006 or newer. His shop handles an average of 6 - 7 trucks a day, so they have seen it all. They also have an in-house tuner that is building a very good reputation... I drove a GMC a couple of months ago that was putting out 1500+ HP. Pretty insane! Anyhow, that's what I've heard lately.
