Generally, you want to put enough down and have large enough payments to stay ahead of depreciation, so you never owe more than it's worth. Varies on the car and how you intend to use it.

If you have to ask the question, you probably shouldn't be purchasing a car in this price range.

There should be much better deals available now than when I bought mine, as I got one of the first autos made. I paid 0 down and got the supplier discount, which was around 2600 off if I remember right.
I just remembered another 1000 off for some rebate the dealer found, but I don't remember what it was now.

I got one of the first 2017 A10’s back in March 2017. I got around 7k off, because I still qualified for the student discount (good for a couple years after graduation) loyalty cash and gm financial bonus cash.
After that I put 11,500 down. 75,000 our the door turned to 68,000 our the door to 57,000 financed. I then refinanced at a local credit union for a much lower interest rate. I’ve only been making payments for 11 months now. I pay 1000 a month, which is more than what my loan requires, so I’m down to 48,000 left. Your mileage may vary. |

I put 5k down. 68.XXX MSRP. Mine was basically fully loaded with sunroof, A10, PDR, etc.
Financed 59k, monthly payments are a tad over $900. |

I buy around invoice, put taxes down, get the longest term that still provides a good rate, maximize my investments and unfortunately rinse and repeat. lol

Down payment should be at least enough to get your monthly payments in the affordable range. The more you put down the less you will pay in interest over the life of the loan, so sizable down payments are not a bad thing. Down payments also keep some folks from getting in over their heads with monthly payments that will swallow them up eventually. Minimum down payments are determined by the bank/finance entity.

My 17 was delivered in April of 17, and was 72k including tax and fees, then I applied 6k in discounts and gave 6k cash and financed the remaining 60k. It should be paid off 12 months from now. Goal was a 5 year note and pay it off in half that. I am on schedule to do so.
Then mods

I was raped on my 2016 Merc so I didnt put anything down. I'm about to have to sell my 18 zl1 due to a move and I'm hoping to not have to cut a check when I do. Wish I'd grow up when it comes to cars. I'm financially stable in all my other decisions. Cars make me stupid.

I never put $ down on a car. I'd rather spend $5k to $10k on Bitcoin. Keep your cash, deal with a higher payment, hopefully you get a low % rate. Depends on how long u gonna keep the car, but don't take my word for it. just my .02 and my .02 aren't even worth .01 so.

Why is there always at least one of these guys in every "payment" thread? Obviously you can't contribute since you always pay cash, so why is there still an urge to post your pointless, arrogant reply?
