My 1LE is getting a new transmission at 11,000 miles

This is a useless post but curious to know what you guys think.

Today I am on day 37 (not consecutive) of my car having to stay overnight at the dealer for warranty issues. Within a month of purchasing my car in May 2017 (used with 1700 miles, certified pre-owned) my car had to spend 25 days at the dealer for transmission issues. At that point they had the car longer than I owned it! I brought it in because when shifting into reverse I'd hear a bad grinding sound. Here's what the service invoice said, "disassembled trans and found 5,6, and reverse synchronizes damaged due magnets in the trans case came out and disintegrated" I don't know how or why that happened.

A year later last Saturday when driving out of town over 120 miles away from home I hear and feel a terrible knocking sound in 5 and 6. The knocking was less subtle but noticeable in lower gears. I had to have the car towed. Also the grind into reverse came back months ago, dropped it off at the dealer, and they told me it was fine. Obviously something is very wrong and they didn't catch it which lead to my car needing a tow.

Now that my car has been at the dealer for the last week, they tell me I it's going to get a new transmission with no firm ETA.

In between my first and second trans issue, my AC went out twice and had to stay overnight at the dealer. Also my left speaker is blown and they're fixing that right now too. I'm on my 3rd rental car. I've spent thousands on cosmetic mods so I don't know if I should pursue lemon law. It's been extremely inconvenient dealing with all this. If I pursue lemon law it's going to take hours to take everything off and put the stock stuff back on.

I wish my 1LE just worked.

Not sure on lemon law, but can you pursue it as a second/used car owner? Youve already accumulated enough time. The dealer should be aware of that and expediting things to keep lemon law from occuring. Thats when they need to be in contact with their reps and getting parts sooner etc.

I'm not quite sure what my options are because it's used. Now the rep told my GM don't want to pay for a new tranny, and I have to wait longer for parts. Great. If it took them over 3 weeks to attempt to fix the first time, and it didn't work, then who knows if this will work. I'm actually a little bit pissed off now. A new transmission is the least they should do.

Dang. Sorry to hear about all this trouble you have had. Have you tried to work with another more helpful dealer? Sure sounds like they are dragging their feet...Also, have you talked to GM? CA should have the best, consumer protecting lemon law, may be find the actual legal document and see where you fall. Just trying to verbalize some of my immediate thoughts on this.

GM doesn’t play well until you legal team up in my recent experience with my wife’s 2018 ATS that the dealer damaged... I’m seeking Diminished value and will have to lawyer up probably.

Not the same as yours but I wish you luck!

You should call GM Customer care and start a case about it, that will put pressure on the dealer to resolve the issue more quickly. Lean on them for a new transmission, its the second time in a year on a 11k mile car.

I will also let you guys know that GM claim # goes to a standard complaint person who I truly don’t think gives a rip. The dealer didn’t even call this, so called customer care rep, back on my big problem well over a week & all this person did was call me to tell me they are waiting for a call.

I have little faith but also suggest calling to at least get the claim # for you records in the event you do seek legal counsel

Sorry to hear all this.

Why are there magnets in the transmission?

To collect metal debris in the fluid to prevent any shavings from getting into critical parts and causing more damage.

Most of the trans wear items are bronze, obviously non-ferris but soft enough and should be small enough particles not to cause problems. But there are ferris wear items that if one grinds gears enough will leave shavings that are hard enough to screw up the bronze blocker rings and synchronizers causing a myriad of problems from bearing failure, shifting problems, and seals leaking, to unit failure.

Sorry to hear about your experience. These cars are usually pretty bullet proof, so I'm going to assume that the problem stems from being used - and probably abused. Either way, it's under factory warranty and GM should happily be working to find root cause and fix the car PERMANENTLY. If they aren't, lawyer up and make them cry.

That said, I can see a few possible explanations...

Owner #1 beats on car and starts the transmission damage. Knowing this, they trade the car in. You buy the car, at some point the wear becomes bad enough that you notice it. At this point, the transmission has made metal chips and the trans cooler lines / heat exchanger are full of debris. Dealer installs new trans, which is quickly flooded with debris and fails again in short order. This assumes the dealer did not verify that the trans cooler system wasn't flushed/purged, which I think is pretty likely since many dealerships shotgun parts and don't look for root cause.

OR

There's an alignment issue on the transmission input or output shafts which is causing extremely accelerated wear. This would usually be accompanied by a vibration or other noticeable nuisance.

Either way - I hope they figure I out for ya!

Pretty good theory, but I'm going to have to say no.
Second failure was a year later.
Had it been a couple weeks or a month, I might agree, but a year later is probably another issue.

Not true, at least in CA.

OP says he bought is certified. I have successfully lemon lawed a used car I bought because I bought it certified. It was my 09' Z06 which had the value guide and head issue. I also bought it in Florida and had it shipped to me.

"A year later last Saturday"...Whops. Well, I tried!

Then either he got a bum replacement trans or there's something else going on in the car that's causing the failures.
