Any help for 2nd gear crunch on manual transmissions
My 2nd gear in my ss won’t go in without a crunch. This happens at low speeds. If i row thru 2nd like I’m racing for the quarter mile, then it dosent do it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Car has 10000 miles and 2dealers already said they felt noting wrong with it.

Mine feels the same way. I think it has something to do with the sync rings. My old M21 felt the same way when I rebuilt it and put in new rings and gears. Just feels real tight without a lot of slop.

1st and 2nd gear use a triple cone synchro - I can hear/feel it on mine as well. Especially when it starts to get cooler out and the fluid is a bit thicker at startup.
I will say that active rev match calms a lot down at slower speeds on that trans. |

I've had mine grind once or twice before. Wasn't the gear because clutch was all the way in, so I assume the synchro. I felt like I was all the way down into gear but it wasn't. Definitely requires a firm pull into place sometimes.

put better fluid in it Amsoil ATF or torque drive. Has fixed it if there is no damage.

Sounds like worn synchronizers...let GM fix it under warranty.

It’s not the stupid skip shift feature? Thing irritates the shit out of me. Have a skip shift eliminator sitting in the glove box. Need to install that.

GM 6mt has had this issue for many years. My 2004 Corvette 6 MT did it and the Corvette forum was filled with people with this issue.

thanks for the responses people but it is not the skip shift. i put the eliminator in it 1000miles ago thinking that would fix the problem and it didn't. It's hard to enjoy this car when that frankly is the only problem with it. I will try to put that amsoil fluid in it when the car gets on a lift and report back. I just don't want to break the gear or something like that since the dealership said its normal. I have to get on it hard as if I'm racing or something of that nature for it to go in 2nd with ease.

Still grinds? Put GM fluid back in and get defective synchronizer replaced. Or skip to: get defective synchronizer replaced 5

Same with mine. Definitely NOT a grind. But worse when cold. I've already had the dealer change the fluid. Next change I'll use a different fluid. I'm not concerned. Tranny feels solid.

Mine does this sometimes when the weather is cold. Hasn't really concerned me and I love this transmission.
How tough is it too change the transmission oil yourself in this car? I would like to change out the fluid sometime and the differential also, just don't want to pay the dealership to do it. Just a cheap old man I guess... |

At very low speeds, if the shifter isn't slotted into 2nd correctly (requires a somewhat firm action), it can slip out and grind. It's a quirk of the tranny and more than likely a 2nd gear synchro design issue, but nothing to be really concerned about, just mindful. With the tall gears, this tranny is definitely smoother when shifted at higher RPMs. Just my 2 cents.
