Using a non dexos oil?

The car is cammed, so I'm not worried about maintaining a warranty. I'd like to run a thicker oil(5w-40) since the car sees a lot of hard driving and autocross. I'm having a hard time finding this weight that is also dexos certified locally. Any reason I can run a non dexos oil?

You can get Dexos 2 5w-40 at Wal-Mart or Napa, is that local enough

I wouldn't hesitate running non-dexos 2 oil, as long as I knew it wasnt some cheap paraffin filled condensate oil. The dexos2 rating is kind of a gimmick... companies have to regularly pay to have that logo on their jug. But the purpose of it, is to make sure the oil life monitor on your car is accurate. If you use an inferior oil, the oil will degrade faster obviously.

^What he said...if you are changing oil every 3k or less(which you should be in a cam car anyway) then it does not matter. Just put a quality 5-40 in it and change it regularly.

As said above it's a marketing tool. They just want to make sure you use good, correct spec oil. If you think about it, GM does not own a refinery, nor check the oil on warranty via Blackstone or an oil analyst service, warranty costs at the dealership don't allow that expense. I.e. GM won't cover the cost of a dealer trying to figure out if your oil was dexos by sending away a sample.

I would not go as far to say it was a "scam". GM does not want na in and out west Texas discount oil change place buying low cost bunker oil and putting it in the cars for their $39 oil change special.

I don't know enough about dexos to know if GM is charging a royalty. Maybe, is it a few cents a quart? maybe.

Alls I know is Joe Average pays $50,000 for an expensive XYZ and wants the cheapest longest drain interval oil (note I did not say lasting or working) possible that will pour into the motor.... that is what Dexos IMO is trying to stop.

I dont mind changing every 3k at all. I put Mobil 1 0-w40 European car blend in the car today, and I plan to change it at 3k miles. I log oil pressure and temperature when I run autox, so if I see anything concerning, I'll report back.

according to threads on bobtheoilguy forums, it's an initial $4,000 fee, plus 9 center per quart.

if GM was genuinely JUST concerned about the quality of oil, it would just be an initial fee, and that fee would cover the testing of said oil wanting to be "DEXOS certified."

I asked black stone if they could tell what oil I had. They said no. Not EVEN if I was DINO or SYN.

Too a point all oil isn't the same but needing something with DEXOS on the label? Come on...any full Syn 5W-30 will be more than enough.

you wont find 5w40 in Dexo label. 5w40 is pretty much diesel oils in market. You are better off pick M1 0w40 instead from Walmart. Cheap and good.
