Buying a new key fob

Hello, I need to buy a 2nd key fob for my Camaro. I read on here that you can program them yourselves without the dealer doing it which is great because my dealer wants $220. My question is can you buy one off ebay or Amazon or should I buy one from GM parts direct or someone like that?

You can program It if you have all the original keys. The process is actually in the manual in the glove box.

If you don't have all the original keys, you have to take it to a dealer.

When you buy a "random" key from any place other than a dealer, the silver "key" part is not Lazer cut for your car, it's blank. Sometimes they are not even selling that with the fob, so check and ask that question of the seller.

Once you buy a fob from someone other than a dealer, they can program it for just under $50.

Hope that helps.

Yes that helps. So I guess the dealer is my only option because I bought my car used and they had lost 1 of the remotes. I only have the 1. That sucks....

No, you can program it with your one. Car has a programming mode. Google how to do it for your car.

I've done it, not on a Gen 6, but on plenty of other cars. It's extremely easy and the fact they charge outrageous prices for it is nuts.

Now, programming it for remote start without it being chipped for the car is another thing.

Pretty much, it didn't go exactly like I was expecting, and it takes about 45 minutes, but in the end everything turned out just peachy, and I have two working remotes

I could not do it with one remote. I did get the fob for my car And had the dealership program it. It would not work on my ZL1 with one one fob. I tried several times. Hopefully you have better luck.

I bought this key fob on ebay

https://www.ebay.com/itm/BRAND-NEW-O...YAAOSw2gxYpzhz

I programmed it as a 3rd key using the original 2 following the instructions in the owners manual. There are also instructions there for programming a second key with one original. The difference is; programmind a third key duplicates the code of the first two. Making a second key from one wipes out the original code on all the keys and assigns a new one to both the keys and car. If someone with ill intent has you missing key, it will render it useless.

I got the key blank cut at a local locksmith fo $20.

The ebay seller is legit, I was worried i was buying a bogus key, but it works perfectly
