Run Flats -Can they be plugged?

quick question
can the stock run flats be plugged in the event of a nail in the tire?

so far ive had all four tires replaced from nails with the rear being recently.
of course, again, another nail.

its hardly leaking air maybe 3psi a day. is it possible to plug it for the time being?

I figured it couldn't but I thought it was worth an ask.

It depends on where the nail is. Close to the side wall? Needs replacement. Towards the middle of the tire? Can be plugged.

its directly in the middle.
both of my dealerships (where I bought the car & my local) told me that the run flats couldn't be plugged.

They CANNOT be "PLUGGED" they can be Patched. Patching a tire requires that it be removed from the rim and the repair done from the inside.

I had a nail in the rear tire at about 1600 miles. Only place that would touch it was a Good year dealer.

I had a nail puncture repaired that was in the center of the tire just like the OPS. I chose to have the tire dismounted and patched. That worked great. Got another 2500 miles out of the tire before replacement time with zero issues. I'd go patch over plug.

do you know roughly how much it was to patch it? out of all four tires they told me it was unfixable.

luckily I saved a front tire and it happens to be the same tire so im just getting that mounted for the time being for 23 bucks. much better than buying a new one let alone two.

and with the replacement 2500 miles afterwards, that was just due to the natural wear?

I think it cost me $25 done at the local Firestone. I replaced it because of natural wear. I got 15000 miles out of the rear tires before I got to the tread markers. The patch was a perfect solution. Safer than plugging for not much money (but many have plugged only with no issues if you can find a tire shop that will do it on the run flats). I wouldn't hesitate to do a patch repair again.

Really? Where did you read that? I had 3 separate run flats on the car at the same time, all with plugs in them and never had an issue. Maybe cause I do my own work.

Plugged a nail hole in mine good old fashion way last year. Been fine

Ream it out a bit by hand. Shove the goo and glue in and pull it out. Done

I plugged mine on the side of the road. Tough getting plug in. The run flat is thick. Rasped it a couple times. Then plugged it. 2000 miles ago. Hasn’t leaked a drop. I’ve hit 120 several times. No problems. I wouldn’t push past that just for safety concerns. I have 11,000 miles on original run flats. Plan on going a couple thousand more and then going to non run flats.

Plug that sucker and get some money out of that tire first.
