Carbon buildup after 117k, pictures

L83 motor, should be identical in regards to carbon buildup on lt1 and l86, he was completely stock, no catch can.

The Camaro has a catch can stock. Well one that recirculates the oil back to pan. Not really a typical catch can.

Catch can or not that's Direct Injection for you. That really isn't that bad from what we have seen with cars that only have 30K miles.

The Camaro has one on the clean side (top of valve covers back to pan). Dirty side PCV goes straight from the crank case into the manifold. Hence why installing a catch can on that line is a good idea.

They refer to is as a "separator", and it'll help for sure. Maybe not as much as a good catch can.

I was thinking the same thing. That doesn't look half bad for 117k miles.

As far as I know that's the highest mileage DI gm v8 with clear photo's of the valvetrain. It's certainly the only one I've seen on vette, camaro, and truck forums.

It looks fantastic. Some minor coking on the valve stems, but not much besides that.

Not to mention, your lt1’s call for 5w-30. Our trucks call for 0w-20. We have a lot of oil burning problems with 0w-20 combined with afm. I switched to 5w-30 personally and I went from burning 2.5 quarts between oil changes, to burning 0.25 quarts. So this guys truck, assuming he used 0w-20, probably saw a lot more oil actually get to the valves then you guys do.

It’s only been 5 years since GM posted their combustion design paper claiming coking had been minimized
