Metallic oil

Ok, I'm sure this will create all kinds of debate.

I changed my oil at 700 miles. Then again 50 miles later to flush it. Probably a total waste but cheap-ish insurance. I've done that with all my performance cars.

It was cloudy that first time but today in the sun, the oil looked slightly opaque in the new drain pan. Looked clear and new coming out. In the bright sunlight, it looked a little sparkly like if you move your finger through it, it makes golden trails. Microscopic stuff suspended in the oil.

I've seen this before in new custom LS builds after initial break in and always assumed it was assembly lube or from breaking in of a new high lift cam but didn't expect to see that from a new, stock LT1.

I'm going to send a sample out, but with only 700 miles, I'm sure there will be some junk in it.

I'm also going to cut the filter open.

It's either break-in debris or it's eating bearings. My guess is the former.

Anyone else get the sunlight swirls during the first couple oil changes? You can only see it in bright light.

There are several threads about this in the Mechanical Maintenance section.

I sent mine out to Blackstone Labs and they did find metal in the oil sample. Normal.

Hmmm, I searched and didn't find much. Searched for the common terms metal in oil, oil sample, metallic oil, etc. I was looking for a lab but found one. I look forward to the results.

Same here. I picked my 16 up with 7500 miles in November. Dealership assured me that the oil and filter were changed around 7400 miles. I did a change in January at 9010 miles and sent it off to Blackstone. It was very high in lead. The iron was high as well but they stated it was typical and leftover from breakin. They suggested I change in 2000 miles and see if the increased lead has cleared up.

I’m still about 1000 miles off from the 2000 miles they suggested.

I've done oil changes on engines I had freshly built and they always came out with a metallic cloudy look that eventually went away with time. I always assumed it was the piston rings breaking into the bores crosshatch, but I am honestly not sure. I know the engines were fine.

You wo ukd think that the filter would trap that stuff.

The filter does trap a significant amount of it. Imagine how it would be if there were no filter.

Now think about all these "lifetime" fluids manufacturers claim these days. Or at least what will be in the fluid for that lifetime.

Yeah, no kidding. As long as stuff lasts beyond the warranty period, do they really care? Lol

If I'm correct, and it's the wearing in of the rings to the cylinder walls, that oil filled with metal dust falls directly into the oil pan. The oil picked up is filtered afterwards as it's picked up to be forced into the bearings. But when you drain, you drain straight from the pan and I think most of that dust settles in the pan until drainage.
