Question about heat extraction through hood
So I made a post showing the new hood I got, and I’ve seen some other types such as the ZL1 hood with a cowl induction type scoop. My question though is, does anyone know why the extraction comes from in front of the engine and not behind it like an old school cowl induction scoop? Even the stock SS hood has the heat extractors on the sides but more forward than you would think they should be. I would think directly over the exhaust manifold would be the hottest area, and that the highest point and to the back would be the best spot for the cowl if it had one?
Just curious if anyone knows why they put them where they did. The only thing I could come up with as far as the ZL1 hood is concerned is that when water hits it from rain or what not, it simply drains down between the radiator and engine. But from a pure heat extraction standpoint it doesn’t seem optimal.

No expert here. Even though the heat extractors are technically functional I suspect they are mostly for looks.
I have been told the base of the windshield area is a high pressure zone. On the old 70 Chevelle didn’t the back of the cowl open up to the air filter? One last thought. My car is boosted, the manifolds get very hot. In stock form air is forced past the manifolds on its way out the bottom. If there was too much venting out the top the air around the manifold might become stagnant and end up melting near by components.

Two different thoughts, uses and zones.
The rear of the windshield is a high pressure zone, as the example used it is a great place to force air into the air cleaner I.E. 70 Chevelle with the vacuum operated hood scoop. Heat extractors work better near the front of the hood, as air rushes over the extractor it creates a vacuum and pulls the heat up, through and out of the heat exchanger vents. |
