Let’s push to get aftermarket ring & pinion gears
It might not do anything, however, I just sent an email to Richmond Gear and Motive Gear, asking about the possibility of future aftermarket gears for these cars. If you are interested in shorter gears as I am, please send each of them an email asking for them. Like I said, it may do nothing, but the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

does the ring gear bolt on to the carrier? someone gave me the impression the ring gear is permanently attached to the carrier, maybe friction welded like a driveshaft yolk. does anyone know if this is true?

I’ve read from one of the guys on here that it is welded for the SS diffs. If it is then it would likey have to be a R&P and carrier combo kit. Even so, it wouldn’t be too hard for Richmond or Motive to pair up with Eaton to produce a kit. It would likely be upwards of $1200-1400, but I think it would be worth it. Especially for the M6 guys.

The ring gear is welded to the differential in the SS. (and every other non-eLSD Alpha-platform car)
I'm working with OS Giken to try and get a (legit, tunable) LSD made that'll accept a bolt-on R&P and fit inside the stock carrier so people can change final drives. I've got an active discussion with Linamar (the company that makes the factory GM assembly) to possibly supply us OEM R&P sets, but we're still pretty far away from having an easy bolt-together solution. If you guys are interested in this, I highly recommend you email OS Giken and tell them you are interested. (sales@osgikenusa.com) This is not an easy thing to bring together since it is going to require some coordination with gear makers, they need to see that the effort is worth it. |

Just sent them an email. It’s wild that GM engineers decided to weld the ring gear to the carrier. I’ve never heard of this being done in any other car from the factory. I still wouldn’t think it would be all that challenging to design and produce a bolt on R&P with carrier package for these cars.

That's a bummer to hear that the ring gear is welding on. Anyone happen to have any pictures of this? At they just tack/spot welds or are they full on welds to the point they had to balance it?
I'm also curious if the R&P is the same between the LSD and eLSD units. I wouldn't mind swapping in a 2.85, it's not much of a gain over the 2.77, but it all helps, an being OEM it should be cheap.

I have a SS 1LE and I would be interested in 3.91. Does anyone know the differences between the R&P in the SS and the one in the 1LE?

I don't think welding is an issue, most guys were going to do a torssen or trutrac anyway for the physical diff. So it ain't a bug it is a feature.

The welding is an issue because we have a chicken-and-egg situation. Nobody makes gears because you can't bolt them to the stock assembly. Nobody makes a diff because there are no gears to bolt to it. We need to solve both at once, that's what I'm trying to do with OS Giken, Linamar, and US Gear.
The eLSD assembly is completely different, made by a different supplier for GM. We aren't the only ones to have welded ring gears, newer BMWs have the same problem- http://autotech.com/bmw-install-kit-...ears-215k.html |

I would love to have a True Track or Torsen... Being able to go to a 3:91 would be an added bonus.

Makes you wonder what GM’s plan is for service when the clutches wear out on these stock limited slips. To my knowledge, there is no service parts for the clutches and the certainly is no service procedure to change them.
