Who Puts Sandbags In Your Trunk For Winter Driving?

This is my 3rd season driving my 2016 camaro in the snow...I have 18" blizzaks and switch to snow/ice driving mode when it gets really snowy and slippery up here in Cleveland.....Haven't had any issues so far....

1. I was wondering if I should place sandbags from home depot in the back of the trunk for added support and driving confidence for winter/snow driving?

2. Does anybody else use sandbags for their camaros during the winter?

I park my Camaro in my neighbor's garage and drive my rear wheel drive Grand Marquis with 3x70lb bags of traffic sand in the trunk as well as a shovel. I have yet to get stuck but if I do I plan to open one of the bags and use the snow shovel to place the sand under the rear tires to improve traction. I do not think I would put that much weight in a Camaro though. Perhaps 2 bags?

Hope this helps you.

This is more common for pickup trucks that have ridiculous weight distribution. For a passenger car, I would not bother.

50-75lbs wouldnt accomplish much anyway.

If the roads are that bad, clearance may get you anyway, I would just stay home until everything is plowed.

I do not have weight in my trunk and have been in snow deep enough to get it on the front lip. No issues with getting stuck. It's surprisingly capable actually.

If you drive carefully and SLOW it down in the winter/snow/ice your fine..

I see SUVs pass me up while driving in the snow and I'm like go ahead bro..
No skin off my nose.....

I just want to get to wherever I'm going in one piece! ....Lol.............

ARGH I cannot stand those idiots in SUV's and 4X4 pickups or AWD vehicles that think they really have an advantage in a snow just because they're larger and have 3" taller tires... ...9 times of 10 most of the accidents I see in snow storms is an overturned SUV, pickup or some other overconfident cocky idiot..

AWD and 4x4 only helps you from a DEAD STOP.. that is IT.. after that it is no less vulnerable than any other vehicle.

Edit: I also think marketing is mostly to blame for this phenomena of the lack of common sense.

The modern Camaros have a near 50/50 weight balance. From the factory there's much more weight over the rear wheels than any of the older Camaro from the 1st-4th gen. They had probably 60-40 if not greater, which definitely required sand bags or added weight in the trunk for better winter handling.

I don't have anything in my trunk, and just a set of Blizzacks. I haven't had a problem and I drive mine all the time in bad weather. Combined with all the traction/stability aids and the ability to accelerate from a stop starting in second gear (the automatic may let you do that as well if you tried), this is the best handling car I've ever owned in bad weather despite it's 460 horses and rear wheel drive.

Remember, your right foot determines how many of those horses go to the wheels. If you're easy, careful, and pay attention, you'll be fine.

I got 2 buckets of cat litter 35 pounds each. Better than sand if you put them under your wheels for traction. I'm surprised how good this car is in the snow in snow/ice mode. Even if was only 1inch on none treated roads. I even tried to spin out on ice in the parking lot where I work couldn't do it. I put my foot on the gas harder than what I usually would and didn't even spin the tires.
When it gets about 4-5" I'll seen if it's really that good. I go to work in the middle of the night before the plows are out.

I think they help you up a snow covered hill also, not ice just snow.
I noticed that also crashes in the winter are SUV's always in the paper or on tv.
Even in the dry weather SUV's always flip over even at 25mph.

I mounted 17” Blizzaks all around and put a 60 lb bag of sand in the trunk over the axle of my 17 V6 1LT M6. It certainly helps, and the sand is available if I need to throw some under the tires at some point. The Snow/Ice setting really soften things up a bunch and makes it a much better snow car.
