Custom painting your engine cover and other pieces - The details

Hi all,

So I decided to paint my own engine cover and fuse box lid and documented all the little in's and out's if anyone needed. This took way longer then I planned with work and life but I finally finished it off and am so happy I did it. Hope this helps if anyone is looking to do this yourself.

Subject: 2016 RS

Material Used:
Adhesion promoter
Duplicolor primer
Duplicolor engine enamel black
Duplicolor engine enamel clear
Duplicolor chrome
Duplicolor metallic blue
Rustoleum copper metallic
Various airbrush colors by spazsticks (had for RC hobby)
Lots of painters tape
Rubbing alcohol
Q tips
Rags/Paper Towels
Dinner for two to make nice nice with the wife for over spraying the porch blue (a little).

1.Pulled the cover and fuse box lid and removed rubber oil cap ring and hex bolt rubber grommet (see pics). This just pops out, don't be skeerd of it.

2. Sanded with 400 grit sand paper to rough it up. I used an old PC mouse as a sanding block (wrap sand paper around a block of wood or something, makes it easier.

3. Taped off outer area.
4. Sprayed adhesion promoter - waited 6 minutes. Second layer adhesion promoter - waited 12 minutes
5. Sprayed 2 coats primer - waited 12 minutes between and after

6. Sprayed inner area with copper - 3 coats 12-15 minutes between each coat.

7. Laid shelf liner from Bed Bath and Beyond over copper and sprayed black to create carbon fiber look.
8. Jacked up black CF look - Sprayed layer of copper and did again. Dry 15 minutes.
9. Wipe down with rag and alcohol to remove spray dust then sprayed with Clear - dry overnight.

10. Pulled outer tape and taped up now painted inside. Keep a single layer of tape and overlap the seem, then follow with a sharp exacto to easily trim clean lines.
11. Removed Bowtie dome (see pics). Used grinder to flatten out dome for new badge (Pain.... In.... The.... Ass....). NOTE- This is held on by a foam type adhesive and pressed on. At the bottom find a notch you can get under it and pry it up and off, or do like and jack it all up thinking it was way thicker than the thin tin material it is. If not changing it out, tape it up and be happy.

12. Rinse and repeat. 2 coats adhesion promoter, 2 coats primer.

13. Sprayed 3 coats chrome - 12 minutes between each.
14. Sprayed 3-4 coats metallic blue. Get it as even as possible.
15. Drop it like a dumb ass and scratch it - New chrome and blue 1 coat each
16. Wipe down with alcohol

17. Set stencil and taped off - did a lot of work here with tooth pics and small brushes to touch up over spray and make perfect.

18. Used Sharpe to fill in the line between inner and outer parts with black.
19. Realized Sharpe didn't work for shit. Used small brush, paint, and patience to fill line in black.
20. Wiped down with alcohol to move dust.
21. coated with 3 even coats clear.

22a. Fuse box was the same process but a bit more taping and hand painting with tooth pics and brushes (little, tiny, wife's makeup brushes)
23a. Bought wife new makeup brushes and got her car washed, dog house avoided.

Mission complete:

Summary - if you like to tinker and have a vision, go for it, it was pretty fun. Not into the time and cursing needed, buy one and call it a day.

Yes, I served back in my youth. US Army. 6th ID Light, Alaska. HOOOAAAA.

If you gained any knowledge or even a giggle from this please take a moment of silence for our POW MIA soldiers. All gave some, some gave all, and because of them we are free. May you find your way home my brothers and sisters.

Thanks all,

Former Sgt. Dan

I know it's not a professional job, but that is very damn impressive. Always great to see people do things on their own, especially when it turns out this good.

Congrats and thank you for your service!!!!

Thanks,

I am a car guy to the core. Getting a little on in years I don't spend many weekends under them like I did back in the day but if there is something I can do myself I much prefer to give it a go first then just buy something. Idle hands tend to buy Ford's, or so I've heard, lol.

If you can walk away from it in the parking lot without looking back....

You bought the wrong car.

Thanks again all. Let me know if anyone has any questions or anything, glad to help.
