Unplugging negative terminal
When installing a CAI directions say to unplug the neg battery terminal. Is this truly necessary? Ive read where people just ignored this directive and all was fine.
Reprogramming all the personalised settings doesnt sound fun. I've read this is for any reason from personal protection to the maf sensors recalibrating. Any feedback is greatly appreciated! Thank you. |

You really don’t lose any personal settings when you disconnect the neg cable. The most you will lose is the HUD will be a little higher than possibly where you custom set it. And the windows will need to be re-indexed by rolling them up and down once...But all your radio stations, seats, etc. don’t go away when you disconnect the power.

The ECM will adjust either way...just like driving at altitude. Of course the ECM is forced to recalculate every time the engine is started and the entire time the engine is running. What if you trailered the car from New York, New York to Denver, Colorado? I know that is more of a MAP sensor thing but both sensors will adjust according to the moment. Disconnecting the battery only puts all of the "learned" categories to "0".

Ok thank you both. I really thought i was going to spend an hour reprogramming my settings...ive heard radio issues too. It sounds like i really dont have to unplug the neg anyway though...

I didn't disconnect mine. Nor on my '13 ZL1, nor my '10 SS. In this case it's just another lawyer CYA step. Just be careful with the MAF sensor.

Ya that makes since. Ive actually installed it without unplugging but im putting it back on now after my first oil change. So i figured i might unplug as directed to see if there is a performance difference. It sounds unnecessary though.

I recommend disconnecting battery when doing this, better safe than sorry? I have done this at least 6 times for mods(2 CAIs, ported throttle body, and connecting wiring for cutouts). The only thing I’ve found is the outside temperature reading shows dashes until driving for 15 minutes or so. Didn’t loose any radio settings, seat memories or anything.
Only takes a minute with a 10mm socket. |

Disconnecting the negative terminal is standard. It isn't always necessary. But it doesn't hurt. I didn't disconnect mine...I don't think. Maybe I did. Who knows? I say play it safe and disconnect it. It'll only add an extra 38 seconds to the entire install.

My job is primarily electrical work and troubleshooting. We always remove power when repairing/replacing sensors because they are almost always connected to sensitive control boards. All it takes is a short on the sensor wiring and you can easily burn the pins on the board where it connects. This is not done to protect the sensor as it is easily replaceable, it is to protect the expensive and difficult to replace and reprogram control modules. Better safe than sorry in my opinion.
