Weld Racing V-Series drag wheels installed!!!

Hi all, finally finished my 15" conversion from Carlyle Racing and installing some Weld V-Series wheels on my 2017 1SS. This kit isn't as cut and dry as a set of S71's, but I feel the look is well worth the trouble! Don't mind the dirty car, drove through 2 hours of rain last night before swapping the rims over! This ain't a show car!

Thanks to Mark @ Carlyle(atomicfusion on here?) for the assistance over the phone and being a stand up guy! I'd recommend his business to anyone wanting to go fast! Or in my case, look fast!

I don't know enough about tires and grip, but wouldn't a wider tire mean more traction/grip?

Is it possible to get 305s?? In a similar setup?

I've been searching with the search function for "drag radials" and your post came up.

Car looks nice. Nice wheels.

Car is looking good. I am looking to do a 15 inch conversion soon also. I have a few questions. Driving impressions? Lessons learned? Suggestions for the next guy? Track results? Anything to compare them to? Why did you choose the wheel and tires that you chose? Why 15 conversion over 17s? I know that is a lot of question but they could be very useful to someone on the forums. Thanks.

The combo does look killer !!!

I have a question also. The MT ET street 275/60/15 is listed at 28.2" on their website, you went with a 26" front runner though ? I've been reading that is a no-no as far as stabilitrak going crazy with any difference greater than 3/4 inch. Any issues with your setup ?

Thanks

Its probably going to cause issues with the 2" difference in diameters. Snowblind is correct about the stabilatrak

No.... Reason being the more sidewall the tire has the more it can "wrinkle" which helps it absorb the engines torque and grip the surface. I went from a 315-35-17 drag radial to a 275-50-15 drag radial on my 4th gen and dropped 8 tenths off my 1/4 time on the street(12.4 @ 124 blowing the tires off John force like to 11.58 @ 127 according to my Gtech). Yes you read that right...8 tenths from a narrower tire with more side wall. Spinning ain't winning!

And yes the OP is going to have issues with ABS with the tire height difference. Really need a 18" front runner so you can run a 28" tire up front and still look decent...not like a balloon.

Thanks Snowblind and Turbo_RORO!

1: So far, I've put around 500 miles on the setup, I take it easy in turns for obvious reasons, but it drives very smooth. I also drive like a grandpa and keep eyes open for sewers and potholes! I've put a few country road test hits, as well as three passes down the drag strip on them.

2: The braking on the kit feels fine, I also feel like there is slightly more pedal travel now, after swapping rear calipers. Maybe it's in my head(the car only has 2k miles on it)

3: Lessons learned/suggestions for the next guy? Index/Mark your camber bolt so you can get the alignment close enough to drive to an alignment! Double check your arm measurements! I had one off by 1/8" which caused my wheel to be at a 45 degree angle and a nice steering pull! Easily fixed, but easily avoidable. You'll need a 36mm socket for the axle nut.

4: Finally ran it tonight for the first time with this setup on my car which is a stock A8, with the exception of this brake/wheel setup. Still running the factory tune and Torque Management, my best pass of the night was an 11.941@115.36mph on a 1.7583 60'. I launched with all of the driver nannies off, and off idle. I tried footbraking to around 2k rpm's and it produced similar 60' times, but a couple 12.0x passes. Completely stock(in July), I ran 12.50@112.4mph with the completely stock car, different track, different temps!

5: I bought the wheel setup lightly used w/ the front runners included. I bought the 28" radial doing minimal research between 26" and 28" radials or issues with the driver nannies. That said, I have experienced zero issues with the stabilitrack or tcs as of yet. I also hit the TCS button one time before I drive it. Not sure if that does anything or not. I chose the 15" kit over the 17" setup for two reasons. First, I intended to put an F1a-94 procharger kit on the car with supporting mods, so I figured I'll leave as little as possible on the table. That plan(or any power adder) is still up in the air at the moment since I just bought back my old LQ4 Powered 1990 Trans Am that will be going under the knife this winter! The other reason, I think the V-Series wheels look badass, and thought 15's were the way to go!

Here's a couple pics from tonight! I paid for the track photos, just posted before I got digital copies!
