Reconditioned

Would you consider putting reconditioned wheels on your ZL1?

Personally, I'm not a fan of the practice - my ZL1 is in the process of being repaired when this subject had came up in conversation. The insurance company is going to see if they can find any reconditioned ZL1 wheels first. If they turn out unsuccessful, then they'll order brand spanking new OEM wheels.

As you can tell, I'm pushing for brand spanking new.

i would be asking for a check instead of letting them do it, and replace the wheels with some lighter joints!!

Doubt they will find any .. but if they do tell the shop to run them on the balancer before they Mount them .. most recons have excessive runout unless just curb rash repair.

Ask the insurance company to write a letter stating that they are liable for the reconditioned wheel. then refer them GM's position regarding reconditioned wheels. it is not allowed. only surface refinish is allowed.

Please also refer the insurer and collision center to this news story that amplifies the importance of following OEM collision procedures. any deviation from what the manufacturer recommends and states is basically asking for liability exposure if anything happens to you down the line.

It is what i do for a living. trust me on this.

Also look at getting your own adjuster or at least advise them you will be calling your personal adjuster, This will help you get the correct amount to either buy new stock wheels or like everyone else is saying some lighter/nicer wheels.

No. Some clown in Milwaukee torched 3 SUV's at a dealership this am. The tires are melted, but the wheel is not. Cleaning and a repaint may qualify as "reconditioned." Yet the heat most probably ruined the strength and integrity of the wheel.

I won't put my life in the hands of some "reconditioner" or claims adjuster (for a few dollars) at 25mph, let alone 155 mph.

Wow thanks for the information, when I brought this up in conversation with the adjuster he seemed bothered by my request to avoid using reconditioned wheels. Although he advocated the wheels would function "like new" something didn't sit right with me about that. I think I'm going to jump on this straight away to have a letter written by them.

Wow that is ridiculous, if insurance companies are aware of the potential hazards of reconditioned wheels; why even bother having them installed? They're asking for a lawsuit - if something goes wrong.
