Defective Goodyear F1 3R's?
Hey guys,
I understand track wear and I know that I'm going to use at least one set of tires each "season" but I think it's possible that my new Goodyear F1 3R's are just plain defective. The tires in these photos have exactly 1,392 miles on them. Now in all fairness, I have done five track days but the rears look great with no cords showing and more importantly, no peeling. The reason I think this is more defect than track wear is that the tire is sort of peeling in parts, not completely around, just in sections. I've never had any sympathy from dealers so I suspect they won't give me any now. Do any of you have any advise to try and get this evaluated? Is there a way to send photos to Cheverolet directly? Since these tires are so new, I'd think they want to see how they are holding up in the real world... Seriously makes me doubt buying replacements...what are your thoughts? (Open the photo for high res versions, these are as-shot, no retouch other than cropping.) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Surprised they lasted that long being what 80 or 100 treadwear, i can destroy my acr front tires in 1 track day, yes 1 track day, the 220 treadwears on the standard zl1 i got 4 days out of the fronts and 6 days out of the rears. Im assuming your swaping the camber back and forth and not leaving it will full camber.

First and foremost, tires wear, and they wear fast on a race track when your car weighs 3,900 lbs.
Also, every tire is corded on the inside with what appears to be too much negative camber. Do you have a pyrometer? |

And, rubber is going to peel when you're getting that close to the cords.

Clearly way too much negative camber and possibly also large amount of toe. Let's hear about your alignment.
Also, 5 track days on a heavy car with R-compounds isn't anywhere near "defective", let alone same plus bad alignment. You want to go fast? It ain't going to be cheap.

It's normal for a 650hp , 3850 lbs car with about -2.7 camber (assuming it's corded the inner side) after 5 track days. I also have 305/325s (NT01) on my SS 1LE and would consider myself lucky if I get more than 6 events out of the front tires (rears look fine).
Keep in mind I don't have the power or the weight of a ZL1/ZL1 1LE. Front tires and rotors are the most common consumables on our cars for sure. Have you been rotating tires? It looks like the one side looks a lot better than the other makes me think that these have been used only on one configuration (clockwise vs counter clockwise or vice versa)

Too much camber.
5 trackdays on 1 set of tires is awesom btw, i only get 2 trackdays per set.

i believe if you send them 26 more pics and make sure you let GM know you tracked the car they will replace them....... they gave me 4 free tanks of gas when i complained that my fuel mileage sucked when i held the pedal to the floor all the time.

Well, at least you guys are unanimous in your feelings. So I'm running the "Track" Camber which is -1.7 PLUS what should be -1 in the stock setting. I didn't have that checked, I just started tracking the car once I had 500 miles on the clock. Do you think -2.7 is too much? What's ironic is that some people have said they want more than -2.7 but given the wear, I completely agree, I'm thinking -2.0 would be ideal. No clue on Toe and some people have said that changing camber will affect Toe but I figured the wizards who came up with this car factored all that in - perhaps not.
Oh and Maddawg, give me the email address to send the pix, I've got at least 30 more so I should be all set! I may even have some GoPro video from inside the wheel well actually showing the rubber coming off during threshold breaking at nearly 140MPH. Jeez, what did they think we were going to do with these things, drive the speed limit, ha...? (PS - I get that you were kidding...) |
