Winter Storage Suggestions?

Im sure more than a few ZL1's will be put away for the winter. Tonight we are having or first freeze and snow is covering the mountain tops. Here is a list off the top of my head for storing my car. Anything to add?

1. Detail
2. Remove battery and move to heated basement/trickle charge
3. Put on jack stands
4. Add fuel stabilizer
5. Car cover
6. Mouse traps outside of car? Overkill since it's on jack stands?

Is the car going to sit outside? In a barn with a dirt floor? How long? Where are you? How cold? Canada/Alaska cold?

I wouldn't put it on jack stands...as the tires hang, that just puts stress on the suspension as it hangs at full drop.

If anything, get the wheel dollies and put them under the wheels.

As for the rest, it probably doesn't need stabil...if the battery isn't going to be subjected to severe temps, then a battery tender is best and leave the battery in the car.

Mouse traps?...again that depends on where/how it will be stored...mice and rabbits love wiring harnesses...much of that can be accessed from under the car. So, mouse traps inside the interior might not help you that much.

need more info on the storage situation...

1. Yes to a good cleaning inside and out
2. There's a transport mode you can program into the car. That OR a battery tender is all you need.
3. Use the drive-on plastic round tire supports. Make sure you pump them up to 40-45 psi for storage.
4. Stabil = yes, and make sure the tank is topped up.
5. Cover = yes.
6. Mouse traps = yes if you have mice, but not inside a car. Pretty much guarantees that you'll have dead mice all bled out and rotting inside your car. Put 'em outside the car and check regularly.

And if you're storing remotely and the paranoid type and don't disconnect the battery.... you can turn on on-star and use "find my vehicle" to make sure it's still there every day.

I have been storing my sports cars for 20 years and I live in Canada. I have had no problems at all. This is my protocol:
1. Oil change
2. Detail
3. Fill tank with gas , add fuel stabilizer and run engine 5-10 min.
4. Overinflated tires to ~48-50 psi
5. Battery tender to maintain charge
6 Steel wool in exhaust tips and a few plastic bowls with moth balls around the car( this will keep mice out). I do this regardless of whether or not I think there are mice.
7. If you have a manual transmission, blocks behind the wheels, car in neutral and parking brake off.
8. Car cover
9. Once she goes to sleep, leave her alone until spring.
I do have a heated garage so that solves the cold temperature problem.
My 40 year old Ferari starts first try every spring !
Hope this helps.

What is the time frame one should be doing these preventative measures? My car sits for 3.5 months at a time... I always top off with fresh fuel and use Stabil. Car gets started every two weeks.

See # 9 above....Don’t start the car at all once you put it to sleep. Unless you’re going to take it out run it for 20 minutes at temperature and at speed. Starting the car up and idling it for a few min doesn’t burn off the gases and just causes more problems. Once it’s down, leave it down, Until you’re ready to start in the spring

I prefer Flatstoppers instead of jack stands to keep the shocks and bushings in their natural position.

I bought these earlier this year, and my ZL1 sat on them for 3.5 months. When I pulled them off, the stock tires were noticeably flat-spotted, so take that for what it is worth. I'll be using jack stands next time.

Your choice, but highly recommend Sea Foam over Stabil.

Seafoam is great for cleaning out carbon, but for storage of gas, sta-bil is better....They do two very different things.....

Did you air up your tires? I stored my 13 ZL1 two seasons (Nov to April) with no issues. I set the pressure to +40 psi

Not sure if temperature is a factor but my attached garage always stays at least in the 30s. Even if it's 10 below outside

Almost exactly what I do and have done with all my sports cars.

Yes, they are different. Sea foam actually mixes with the fuel.
#1 STABILIZE YOUR FUEL
Adding Sea Foam Motor Treatment helps fuel to resist evaporation, preserves ignition vapors, and prevents the formation of gum and varnish in fuel systems. Gum and varnish residues (oxidized fuel) are the most common cause of poor engine function.

Used Stabil for 20 years with problems, especially on small engines. Switched to Seafoam 15 years ago - problem free. As I said, "your choice."

Yeah, I aired them up. I’m in San Antonio, so the temps don’t get too low. It was over this summer that it was in storage anyways (May-September). Not sure what the deal was, but I won’t do it again with the Nittos I have now.
