I would be surprised if they didn't have access to that info

Can that information be used against you for buying insurance ? I was going down the interstate the other day and I have just broken 1000 miles. So I thought I would open it up a little. Before I knew it I was at 100 mph. As soon as I realized it I let up. But then all of the sudden my in car phone rings and it's an onstar rep. They don't say anything and then after 10 seconds they hang up. I was just wondering how intrusive onstar is and if their info can be used against us ??

no they are not going to report you. if they did they would loose alot of customers. if you sign up for their monitoring so you can get a discount they give your insurance company a score thats made up of many things including speed but your insurance company wont know you ever were speeding.

Good news. Thanks. I was really starting to wonder how I was going to drive my car with it wrapped in aluminum foil. Lol.

There is a HUGE firewall between getting/having the data and associating it with a customer.

I had a job at GM where we wanted the data on how customers used their vehicles so we could develop better requirements. The data was there, but there was ZERO ability to associate with the customer.

Do some Google searches, GM did this with the Volt launch.

They will not report you or publish your results to a 3rd party.

Also keep in mind, OnStar isn't "watching you live". Can you imagine the data storage required for every moment a car is operating? The last I knew, they could simply ping the vehicle and record it's current state.

Some people envision a large room full of people watching and listening to them while they drive.

Now when Mini includes Alexa in all cars next year, I wonder if Bezos will use that data. GM I actually trust.............Amazon who wants to target and sell you more stuff I'm not so sure.

I believe they can monitor conversations inside the car. Be careful, big brother is listening.

Every car sold has a "black Box". It records just about everything. If you are in an accident they will have data from your car. Now how long it goes back, what long term data it stores I do not know.

I'm willing to bet they sell the speed info to insurance companies.

For your benefit of course

I don't trust it, at all. When my free trial is up I am done with on star. Don't even use it anyway

How many millions of cars have OnStar?

C'mon on folks.

With all the hot rod guys on here who regularly exceed the speed limit, has anyone ever posted saying the insurance company cancelled him or increased rates for speeding (other than evidenced by a ticket, of course)?

What good is OnStar? What do people pay them for? If u are stranded? I have AAA. If u need directions have phone. No need to pay on star for anything

I have Onstar. Yes it can monitor everything. There is a thing on the website called Smart Driver and it allows you to see how many times the car accelerated fast, braked hard, and broke 80mph. It also marks the spots on a map via GPS. Good thing is I can tell if the service department or valets ever abuse the car.

With that said, unless you specifically turn on the option to "anonymously" send driver info to your insurance company, then this info is not shared. My insurance company has never asked about my driving habits. I think people are a little too paranoid of technology.

I will say that its probably very likely that if you ever kill someone in an accident and it goes to court, the court can demand the black box records in the car and/or the onstar records as evidence.

They do, but I covered the car in tin foil so they can't track me so I'm good.
