Paint ruined $12,000 in damage, suggestions?

Driving down the highway, noticed construction ahead signs, reduced my speed, then realized they were repaving the highway. They peeled back the top layer of concrete and all that was left was exposed gravel. I had no where to turn around, and all off the oncoming cars is what did the damage. All I heard was rock after rock hitting my car.

I had no idea that my insurance would cover stone chips, but to my surprise, they did. Windshield, headlights, grill, front bowtie as well as a total paint job of the complete car.

Any suggestions of any paint mods I should get now as I have the chance? My hood and spoiler were already painted matte black, I am thinking the side mirrors and antenna matte black?

Car goes in next week fingers crossed...

ironically, about 2 months ago I had a rock truck about 1./4 mile ahead of me on I75 I also had no where to go. I seen the car ahead of me's windshield spider and then heard a ton of rocks. tried to back out but no where really to go. Luckly I had the expel stuff on and did its job. the insurance cut me a check for 4700 bucks to replace all that and the grill, headlights and windshield. didn't even question. so that's what I've been doing and looks brand new again! Thank God for the expel stuff!.

I am jealous. I would love to get a free respray on the insurance companies dime. The orange peel on this thing is brutal.

The insurance first estimated $5,000, then the dealer went over it for over an hour and found ALL the damage. They even took a cloth and went over the windshield and showed me where it was catching on chips that I didn't even see, the same for the headlights.

I thought about wrapping, but the chips are so deep, the wrap would have lower spots. I am just happy my insurance covered it.

Glen,
How many clear coats would you suggest I tell the bodyshop to do? I have known the bodyshop manager for 30 years, so I trust he will do what I ask. Do dealerships normally wet sand? I don't mind paying extra to have it done. Thanks for your input.

Dealerships don't wet sand, but body shops certainly do. Your guy should know how much to put on using a paint thickness meter. Don't know how much is enough to get rid of orange peel, and sand down to SEMA show like quality, I'd guess another three coats…

Extra layers or paint and clear do not help. Too much material is bad and will result in chips and cracks. A layer of paint is a out as thick as a sheet of paper. It is designed to flex and absorb shock to an extent. 3 coats will flex and absorb shock...10 coats will act like a barrier and result in a chip. Piling on clear does not result in a better finish. Stop watching TV shows. That only works if you are flow coating. 3 coats of clear sand it down and 2 more coats ...but that's a body shop tactic not a dealership. Dealerships replace panels and spray, with minimal body work required.

The prep-work is more important than the finish work. If the base metal has a bunch of bondo spots, etc, that's not good. How do they plan on fixing the dents and dings?

One of my major complaints with bodywork is, that it is almost always noticeable that the car was repaired. With that, the car has now devalued and insurance would owe you some cash for that. I forget the term they use for that.

Any good body shop that knows their stuff will make the paint work and be more durable. First step is to find one that doesnt use waterborne paint, find one that paints with Urethane paint. See if you can get the shop to take it down to the bare surface and then paint up from there.

If you can go from base layer metal back up with a quality paint you will be fine. Then I would add in some clear paint film once the new paint has been cleared to have wrap put on it.
