2017 2ss 2.5 quarts low on oil?
So broke the engine in changed the break in oil out around 1,200 miles. 10 quarts of Mobil 1! At 5,500 miles changed again but had them boys in the pit measure how much came out about 7.5 quarts from the pan and another .5 from filter or so. Why was it so low? I've heard the lt1 sucks it into the intake manifold? Possible fixes, catch can? A little advice would be nice
Thanks in advance |

Some engines will use more oil during break in. You'll now have to monitor the usage very carefully. You can also email GM Customer care just to get a case open.
If excessive oil use is still noted after break-in, have a cylinder leak down check done (under warranty) to look for possible problems with an unseated ring or cyl head sealing issue. Good luck |

Who measured and how did they measure? I think 2 quarts low might not even show on the dipstick. Don't put too much stock into guys who didn't pay much attention. Unless you saw for yourself then I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just keep an eye on your dipstick every 1k miles or so.

I used to work with these guys I watched them do it so it's accurate maybe .5 quart of spillage but still a worrysome amount missing. Would I see oil leaking if I had a cylinder leak?

If you measure the oil volume after the fact they may not have drained all the oil that was in there and then when transferring from drain pan to whatever they were using to measure the volume, they may not have drained all of that. Same deal for the oil filter - they may not have drained all of that oil. You also mentioned it had 10qt and they drained 7.5 from the pan and 0.5 from the filter. That's 8qt total and 2qt low versus the 2.5qt low mentioned. I'd trust the dipstick method a lot more than the drain & measure method to get an accurate idea on exactly how full the oil system is.

Remember the LT1 takes a long time for all the oil to drain down to the pan. It's why you can't just turn off the engine and check the dipstick immediately. It's unlikely that 2 quarts of oil were sucked downy out intake manifold.
Now that your old buddies put in 10 new quarts, I would check your oil level in the morning after all as drained down to see if you are actually overfilled. During break-in, I went through just short of a quart. Hasn't used any appreciable oil since. |

I checked the dip stick prior was maybe a tiny drop on the bottom. That was first thing in the morning before I cranked it. So it was definitely low regardless. I'll see how this oil change goes at 10,000! If all goes well, then it's time for some kooks, cai, and a tune

I just changed my oil yesterday (myself) and I let it drain for 30-45 mins. All 10 qt came out. I can hear and see oil coming down slowly to the oil pan after 15 mins in. There's no way those quicky lube places (or even dealers) would wait 30 mins to drain all of the oil out.

In the moments spend pulling into the pit, it would have the oil all up in the engine and it sure as hell takes it's sweet time getting back down.
Just turning the car one for a moment then waiting 30 minutes isn't enough. It originally showed me as having low oil levels on the stick. I waited next morning and checked before pulling out, right at the full mark. |

The service manager at Days Chevrolet in Acworth told me they need 10 qts plus coolers. So when I do my oil change I get 11 qts. Then I put maby half to 3/4 of that last qt in.

That doesn't sound right. I thought the whole reason it was 10 quarts is BECAUSE of the coolers. 10 qt's is a crap load of oil.

Should be putting 9 in, then a bit at the time for the 10th until it's at the full level. |

Yea but when I just put 10 in it has always been low. 10 is just for the motor not including the little bit the oil cooler needs.

The first two oil changes I did I thought my engine was drinking oil but it was just not enough oil. The last three I put 10 in drive it a day let it sit over night then first thing next day put at least half of the 11th qt in. Then I drive it that day then check it in the am after it sat all night and is usually right on the money.
