A10 ZL1 Street Car Takeover

I took the Z to Street Car Takeover in Bowling Green this past weekend and had a blast. The weather was awesome! Unlike Camarofest where it was super hot, humid, and no air movement. Got the chance to watch drifting for the first time in person. Very Cool!! There was super fast rides from every make and model there. Some very amazing stuff like a wicked fast Jeep that had its front tires barely skimming the track as it went flying down the strip!

Besides wanting to see drifting live and in person for the first time and hoping Cleetus would have Leroy there, as they were advertising 1320 Video being there, I was hoping to get my car on a lower elevation track than my hometown track in these cooler temps and see what kind of difference it would make. Boy did it ever speed me up!

My previous best at home with double the elevation and a hot humid day like Camarofest was a 11.52 at 123 mph which I backed up with an 11.54 at 121.5 mph after hotlapping the car 7 times that day. Everyone was very impressed at how I could run the car back to back in those conditions and run those kind of times, with the slower runs simply coming from trying different launch methods that didn't work. It was funny how my very first run was my fastest and my last one was right on its heals and my second fastest.

Not only was the weather and elevation better in Bowling Green, but the track prep was excellent, so I had more grip than I've had anywhere thus far. My previous best 60' of 1.84 was dropped to a 1.73 and my slowest speed was still faster than my previous best. My very first run would've been right there with my other 3 had it not been for a couple of issues. First off, I didn't have room to drive around the water box like I normally do, and likely led to me spinning and wheelhopping the launch like I did. Then mid track, the car fell over for a split second (felt like an eternity) and took back off. I watched the PDR video after the run and saw that the car was slow to shift from 3rd to 4th and the engine just hit the rev limiter. Nothing like this has ever happened before. The only thing I can think of, is the trans just wasn't up to temp, as it was reading less than 150 after that pass, and as most everyone knows, these A10s normally stay around 190 just cruising. I immediately got back in line and even with a little heat soak from sitting in the staging lanes, ran my first low 11 pass at 124.95 mph. 11.289 to be more precise.

With racing events going on, it would be about 3 and a half hours before I would get to make another pass. The temp had dropped, as it was getting dark, so my hopes of even more speed raised. After hooking so good on my last run earlier, I was thinking about matting the throttle to see what happened, but decided to play it safe and do what I had been doing with success, then if I got a second run, I would go for it. That's exactly what I did. Once again, the car hooked out of the hole and rocketed down the track. I knew it was another good pass from the seat of the pants and from the in dash timer that I'd been using all day. It was showing another 3.4 0-60 and 11.2 quarter like the previous run, so I was a little surprised when I was handed the timeslip and it read 11.192 at 127.33 mph!

Sticking with my original plan, I was able to get back in line one more time, so I was going to mat the pedal on the launch and hope for the best. It felt like that was a mistake as the car wheelhopped off the line, but after crossing the finish and looking down at the dash timer, it read 3.3 0-60 and 11.1 for the quarter! I was hoping I had once again improved my time, but the timeslip said otherwise. I had actually pulled off a slightly better 60', but with the heat soak from the previous run, I lost time and speed from mid track on, and slowed to an 11.208 at 125.63 mph. I really wish I had that run to do over, as I ended up letting a Honda beat me down the track, as I wasn't worried about what anyone beside of me was doing, and just trying to improve my timeslip. I had my slowest reaction time on that run. Had I cut a better light and been .3 faster like my first 2 runs of the day, I would've beat him by .1. That was one fast and wicked sounding Honda!

Not really into drag racing, but that's an impressive run for a bone stock ZL1. I think we'll see high tens from these very soon.

Yeah. I think we'll see 10s when someone catches one of those 0 to -DA days on a nicely prepped track.

Soon as we can turn TC off completely and some 305 drag radials to get 1.5-1.6 60fts

Were you manually shifting on that hanging shift? Seems like you shift close to the limiter. You might have hit it because that's exactly how hitting the limiter behaves. There's an explanation that first is short shifted so much in full auto because the rpms climb so fast that if you shift anything past 6k, you will hit the limiter, I believe it because I've hit the limiter in 1st thinking I shifted around 6k. But I've hit the limiter in other gears and it hangs just like that. My 2 cents.

Beyond that, freaking fantastic runs. These cars are dynoing at 540-550whp and 3900 lbs and cutting that time. Unbelievable.

Hellcats dyno 100whp more and barely cut those times, albeit 700 lbs more. Not hating on hellcats. My buddy has one and it's an amazing machine and hell of a ride. It's what convinced me to get back into a v8. Just making comparisons

That's what I've been noticing. I seem to be one of the only ones trapping that in the 8th. The only one I've seen trap close to that is running drag radials and a cold air intake. I trapped 99 at my local track on a hot humid 3500 DA day. Those times and speeds have me wondering what it'll do with a really sticky tire that let's me launch it much harder.

No. I was in auto on that slow shift and that's exactly what happened. It was slow to shift and hit the limiter. I didn't know what happened until I watched the PDR video after the run. I think the transmission was just too cool to be run hard yet. The car sat for about 7 1/2 hours before that run and since the trans temp was less than 150 after that run, I'm guessing that's what caused it. There was another guy there with an A10 ZL1 that had the exact same thing happen to him in the exact same gear on his first run. I was hoping he was on our forum, but he wasn't. I told him he needs to get on here.

I'm sure, because I know there are more ZL1s out there that have been on the strip than what the fast list shows. So stop holding out on us.

Thanks! I know you have to have some good ones, because I'm pretty sure I remember you posting an 11.2 from your dash timer which has proven very accurate every time I've used it at the strip.
