Brought my 1LE to CarMax and...

A new CarMax just opened near my home, so I thought I'd see what they're all about and brought my SS 1LE in for an appraisal. I'm not necessarily looking to sell mine, but if the price was right I would definitely consider. Let's just say I laughed at their offer. Pretty clear that they appraised it as a normal SS and not a 1LE, and when I asked if they considered the 1LE package, they looked at me like I was speaking a different language. (Mine is 8 months old with just over 11k miles, otherwise perfect condition with brand new tires.)

The guys at Carmax run a middle of the road , mainstream, middle America type operation. You would do much better trying to sell it to some high-performance lot that's sells P's Lotus, etc . I'm sure they don't give a shit about the 1LE option, now ask them about the features of a Honda Odyssey, and they can prob do it blindfolded.

I dont know why anyone would sell their car to CarMax - or any dealer, really...Unless $$ is no object.

You're always gonna do better selling it yourself

I was quoted near retail for my 2016 GTI. I used that quote when I traded in for the 17 1LE

Yeah carmax sucks. I don't know where they got the rep of offering a lot on appraisals but is total bs.

Trading can be okay in some instances. You can also save big time on tax in some states as you pay the tax on the difference of the price of the new car and the trade worth, making the extra $$ you'd make selling privately pretty much a wash and more trouble than it's worth.

Older/higher mile performance cars usually worth selling privately.

Good to know my car is worth much more than that.

Go to CarMax for a lube job. They're really good at it.

I honestly thought they would offer even less. If they quoted it as a standard 1ss that's actually not that bad.

Carmax offers suck in general. I took my 5th gen in That blue booked for 20k and they offered 11k. Ended up selling private party for 19.

Ten years ago CarMax did offer relatively high prices for buying your used car.

Ten years ago Guitar Center offered quite high trade in prices for guitars.

The recession took care of overvaluing used assets.

If CarMax wants to make 20-25% on selling a used car then a $30K offer translates into a $36K - $37.5K asking retail price. Is that enough of a difference from a new 2018 1LE?

I actually had a good experience with Carmax for my 2010 SS. Sold it and used extra for my down on my 2016. As far as going to Carmax just for sheets and giggles on a lazy afternoon....I'll pass. LOL Please include milk with cookie of choice.
