Parking Lot Life Hack

I know it's a Tesla but I could have used something like this a few months ago. Lol

Parking lots are my worst nightmare.

A kid swinging open the rear door of any car and especially an SUV would miss those completely. This is not good enough. You need to park in East BF to be safe and even with that, you're not guaranteed.

Haha! Is that a homemade job? Or is that a Tesla accessory?

Love it...if you did that down here in the Rio Grande Valley, they would flop them cushions on the hood & give the kids permission for a good couple of swinging whacks out of their 1982 Suburban just for grins to confirm their envy.

I would be afraid of someone doing something on purpose if I had them on my car

I knew a guy in college that saw a car taking two spaces at the bar and he intentionally banged his door against it multiple times. I was horrified.

I know this is going to sound kind of nuts, but with all the crazy amount of technology poured into cars these days including lane assist, auto breaking, and even autonomous driving, why the heck has nobody built a car with an external airbag?

Maybe "airbag" is the wrong choice of words. It'd do more harm than good to blow off an entire body panel and inflate an air cushion to avoid something hitting your car. But maybe some sort of "bumper car" style bumper guards that pop out from under the car via mechanical arms. It could be tricky to do this at the front or rear bumper but I could see this working along the rocker panels.

If they can make enough sensors and gps goodies for driverless cars, maybe they could make a sophisticated door hinge system that would prevent the door from opening into another car or object once parked....

As far as the Styrofoam system, might actually tempt more cars to just open the door into them rather than try to avoid the other car entirely...

I have seen those Styrofoam tubes set up in two car garages where the fit for two cars is tight....You can customize it for your own personal cars and avoid dings in your garage...

I would improvise and add sharp metal spikes pointing outward from those blue pads.

I HATE going where someone can park next to me. Several times Ive been in a parking lot and someone would just swing their door open right into the side of my vehicle. As calm as I try to be, I usually get my point across to these types of people. No d@mn respect at all. I wont even drive my camaro to places i know wont have safe parking unless someone is meeting me so that they can park next to me.

Ditto. I don't bring the fifty out very much, but went to have lunch with my brother the other day. I parked on an empty row in front of a closed business on the side of the restaurant, up against the curb.

I come out and of course, some dippin' dot in a wasted impala had 30 other spots to pick from in front of that closed business and parked right next to me, over the line.

Ugh, the inner me just wants to go GTA all over those hooptys. The real me just gets in with a 'who passed gas' look on my face and drives off.

The problem is this: Just like on the topic of autonomous cars, it benefits the owner but does nothing obviously in terms of the drivers around you. It's not feasible to think everybody is going to have a car with the latest and greatest tech, especially when there are so many people with beaters who see their car as a means of going from point A to point B. They view their car as a traveling body -- a missile -- and come hell or high water, they will not permit you to delay them so much as even a second and cause an interruption their day.

What we eventually need are cars that will simply drive away on their own if a car parks too close and find a new spot. Or better yet, the car will drive home and come back when you summon it.

Or you buy a cheap beater of your own and join into the herd mentality. I hear the perks include being able to hit your hazard lights to park in the fire lane at Walmart.
