Best material for Exhaust?
I'm planning on going with a straight pipe exhaust since my Kooks headers that I ordered are catless anyways. I was planning on buy the MBRP race series catback, but a local exhaust shop can make me a straight pipe exhaust with a custom H-pipe installed for cheaper. I'm not sure what kind of metal they'd be using, I forgot to ask, but does the kind of metal change exhaust note by any chance? Also, would a steel vs aluminum exhaust be a lot of weight difference for a catback?

Typically aluminum wouldn't be an option. It has a lower melting point than steel nor is it as flexible and easy to work with. You can get away with using aluminum as you get further from the engine, such as the muffler/tail-pipes. Otherwise for weight savings you'd be looking at titanium instead.

Amazon has a few vendors that sell 304 stainless straight pipe available. I bought some to have a custom H-Pipe made as well.

I dont think he gets invited to any by the way he talks lol
Best thing i can say is dont cheap out. Aluminized steel is shit in the long run, just get some good 304s either in a kit ( *cough cough Borla FTW cough cough* ) or any other. Unless you want to be back at the muffler ahop after a few short years because your exhaust is rusting apart.

6061 aluminum is quite doable beyond the collector and would save some weight. Fabbing Al takes some skills and experience above and beyond normal welding and forming. I would guess that material costs would be greater for the right Al also.
But honestly, 304 SS is the optimal material. Easy to weld and forms up well. The "Best" material, Chrome Moly. |

HOT for humans is a little bit different then Hot for material deterioration. Aluminum can withstand a lot of heat.
