Your opinion please on this square setup

I'm trying to save money and weight. What do you think about stretching a 265/40/19 on a square 19X9.5 ET22 rims?

265 tires are substantially cheaper than 275/285/295 . Also they are about 2 lb. lighter per corner.

Thanks for your help

Considering my rears are 275/35/20 on 9.5" wide rims I wouldn't consider a 264/40 a stretch by any means. Most 285 wide tires I've looked at list a 9.5" rim as the minimum recommended size.

Go for it if that's the size you think you'd be happy with. Personally I'm wanting to go with a 285 square set-up at some point.

I have to recommend the 285 squared. They just work well on all our cars it seems. I have a 285 squared setup with Cup2's and they work great even on the ZL1. I use that setup for the tighter courses I drive (with slightly shorter straights). Flawless. What I really like about it is the improvement to the understeering. I do jump back up to the staggered 325/305 setup when I'm at the larger sweeping turny tracks but I can't say its more than maybe a second or two faster on a 2 minute track. That means a much cheaper day of driving when I'm not going for PB's. I don't think the ZL1 would do well under a 285 but you can obviously get away with a bit smaller.

Thanks

Will this be a dedicated track setup? Are these OEM wheels? If you haven't purchased them already Apex wheels are dirt cheap (and on sale right now)

I would recommend at least 10" wide wheels with 295/30/19 or above for the tire sizes.

On our cars especially with the MRC suspension, I wouldn't recommend softer sidewall tires like Trofeo R or Cup 2 since our MRC calibration from factory is designed for street tires. NT01, RE71R, R888R (no experience with them) might suit you better IMO

Yes it will be dedicated track set. I'm a bit worried about 295/30/19 since the diameter is more than 6% difference compared to stock calibration (non 1LE)
I guess, there's always 285/35/19.

Was thinking bout Apex wheels, however the offset might not work since their 10" rims only has 25 offset. With negative camber I might run into problems.

At a minimum, 9.5" width, possibly 10" with 18" diameter. This would put my car out of the Street class in SCCA autocross but I really don't feel like it's properly classed anyway, (BS).
The offset will depend on what's available in whatever wheels I end up buying. I'd love to get some Forgestars but they're not in my budget unless I end up selling my race car, and I'm not ready to do that 'just yet'.

Are you referring to the overall diameter of the tires? If so I wouldn't worry about it at all 285/35/19 is too much tire and it's a bit counterproductive for track use since the overall diameter will be bigger than 295/30/19 and it's probably heavier and will result in taller gears.

+25mm offset should be easily corrected with 5mm spacers so it shouldn't cause any issue

Thanks for the info. I thought the car /computer might go bananas if the overall wheel diameter significantly changes

The Apex 19x10 et25 works great on our cars with a square 285/35R19 setup. Lots of us run that on track and the car is balanced really well with them.

Thanks Eric. Did you have issues getting negative camber in the front with these wheels?

yea this is a good setup. I ground away a small section of the strut (so it looks like a 1LE strut) but I dont think I needed to. Another option is to use 3mm spacers and longer studs, but I have not needed them.

Currently im using 275s because I wanted Direzzas, but next I think I am going to go to an NT01 at 285, or an RS4 at 305 (hankook lists 10 inch as a compatible wheel).

I know you are talking about tires here but when I was shopping for wheels I was looking for the lightest ones I could. The two options I was looking at were 5lbs different and the cheaper ones were heavier. A friend gave me some advice and basically said.. "the car had 455hp and torque, weight isnt as big an issue like your BRZ." Makes sense. That said I get the pricing issue but I would go with a 275 myself. Im on 275 square on OE wheel widths.... not looking forward to mounting them when I need new ones lol

Yes, you will have issues with anything over about 1.5* negative in the front with MRC. The inner lip of the wheel will hit the strut if you have MRC. You can either grind away a little portion of the strut or you can run spacers and longer studs. I have the longer studs and 5mm spacers sitting on my workbench and the plan this summer is to do that modification. To put the longer studs in you will need to do a little grinding on the spindle if you don't want to remove the hub all the way.

There are a few good threads on this in the wheels section if you search by keyword "Apex" in there.
