HP Tuners - who owns it?

Just curious - when you have your car tuned at a shop, and I assume they have to purchase a license for HP tuners for each car they tune, who owns the license?

I would think the customer does...and if so, does it matter? Can I then buy HP tuners software and use that license on my own car? Can I take it to another tuner and they can use the license?

Just curious about the ins and outs of having a work done at a shop.

thanks!

You license each pcm with a interface that you get when you purchase HP Tuners.

When a shop tunes your car they are using 2 credits to license the interface to your computer and gain access so they own the rights to your PCM.

If you were to buy HP tuners yourself you can license your pcm and access your computer, if in fact you want to let another shop use your interface to tune your car all it might save you at that point is $100.00

If you have your car tuned by another shop and then decide to purchase HP tuners you can "Read" there tune file and see the changes by comparing it to a stock file but you will not be able to edit or adjust it without licensing your interface to your cars computer.

a 17 is $200 for the ecm and another $400 if you want to do the trans and have an a8.

pretty much what ^^ said. the license is on the shops cable. they are not going to let you touch their cable, they may have 10's of thousands dollars worth of licenses on that cable.

I do and have a bunch of different tunes that we ran on the dyno. All my initial tunes came from the SCT tune from Magnuson and discussed with Mike from Magnuson before trying them at the track and on the street. He also sent me a tune for the VP109 and will be working with him this weekend on the 93 tune with the Meth injection. Then we will run it at the track again on the power tour at Gateway on the 14th. I have just made minor changes, but need to start data logging more at the track which is where its going to show up.
