Unhappy with steering wheel..
A little history is that my last 2 vehicles were SRT vehicles and both had meaty "thick"" soft leather wrapped wheels especially the 2014 Jeep. Dont get me wrong I am in love with my M6 the only unhappy piece with the entire ZL1 I feel is the steering wheel.
To me it seems as though the suede for which is somewhat slippery and not at all padded for fingers to dig in and grasp + the small diameter of were I hold on is a hindrance as i do not feel I get a really good grip when aggressively cornering. With having a manual its enhanced due to not always able to hold with 2 hands. I truly feel the wheel should have been leather especially since its not cushioned, Anyone else feel this way? |

I think the suede wheel is pretty decent. Not as thick as the rim in SRT vehicles, but I think it feels better. The shape is pretty good for a 9-3 grip, and I don't find it slippery at all.
Compared to the wheel in my C5 Z06, it's like a race car! |

I was the same way when the 2012 ZL1 came out. Now I actually like it...
![]() I do really like the heat function. Kind of laughed at first thinking those Engineers from Detroit were taking care of the North but it really feels great on your hands down here in the heat too. |

I'd consider trading my SS wheel if you'd like.

I'm the opposite, I don't see any issues with grip on the wheel and can easily corner it with one hand w/o slippage.. I think part of it is going to be around the circumference of your hands when grasped to varying levels of closure, along with applied muscular force and whether or not your hands perspire a lot.
Now when I get back in our 2016 2SS with the leather wrapped wheel, I don't like it and it feels thicker to me than the suede ZL1 wheel. |

Read this article...
http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/...al-test-review The design team specifically avoided the artificially thick wheel to provide better tactile feedback... Love it and although I felt like you initially, I've come around.... Loving the ZL1 more and more day by day...every thing about it

I honestly felt the same thing the first time I put my hands on the wheel. I thought it felt thin and slippery compared to other cars I've driven and also what I was imagining. However, it only took me a short time to realize this is a much more comfortable wheel. Also, I found it particularly comfortable on my recent track day. It offered amazing control with no fatigue. It's much better than what I expected.

Thanks for the responses and info on why GM made it on purpose thin.
Hopefully it will just take some time for me to feel comfortable with it after driving the other 2 cars for the last 7 years....

The leather steering wheel is much slicker IMO when wearing racing gloves. Even with the sticky palm and finger material on mine, I much prefer the ZL1 wheel over the same leather wrapped in my Corvette.

Had the same reaction coming from a BMW M wheel, much thicker with soft leather... But now the ZL1 wheel is growing on me, feels like you can flick it to do your bidding

![]() The ZL1 wheel is a much better size, and I don't mind the alcantara as much as I thought I would, although I still think I would prefer perforated leather. |
