Ive had this in petrolhead edition for a while. Used it a few times at the drag track to tecord last year at the end. Anyone have any experience with it?
And more importantly an obd2 dongle reccomendation so that it can pick up some parameters like throttle and gear positions? On the site it has 50-100$ ones that are a part of a system. Anyone reccomend any that are not apart of a system? I contacted gen5diy about the pdr software coming out, and itll soon be available for the 8 inch screens. Since i have the 7, itll be even longer before i can upgrade to that....if at all. So just trying to use what i have available right now.

I have the petrolead edition as well. It works good enough, but the gps leaves something to be desired on a mobile device, as the refresh rate is slow. I have just bought the Dual brand external Bluetooth gps in hopes of making it better, but i have not had a chance to use it yet. As for a OBD dongle, I am in the same boat as you, looking for feedback.
All in all I think for the price its a decent tool, and those that I know that have used the same external GPS as I have, and a Bluetooth have really nice media to put out.

I bought this cheap OBD dongle for iPhone. I got it to connect to Harry's but I tried it once to see if it would overlay on the video and it didn't. Maybe I just didn't have the settings right but I got frustrated and didn't try to troubleshoot and didn't try it again. I've been meaning to but it just isn't a priority.

Was looking into a gps system down the road as well. Quote:
Just checked it again.. im guessing the one piece works for both. They showed 4 options. 12.99 to 18.99 Quote:
Only thing to be weary about is the can bus system. Some of the dongles have issies reading rhe newer obd2 cars. Thats why i was checking to see what everyone runs here.

This is the external GPS I bought, I won it on an auction on ebay for 50$, it was pretty much brand new.

More and more apps (especially IOS) block cheap OBD dongles.
I use TrackAddict. It's working really well for IOS and not as buggy as Harry's. Also with certain OBDII readers and IOS it will read engine oil temp and trans temp. See video below - Sorry I don't know how to embed Vimeo

I use Harry's with the OBD Link MX and it works well.
I have the dual dual XGPS 160 and used it for about a year with great results but it has quit working for me. The phone GPS is definitely lacking so I am considering getting something else doesn't look like there are many options though.

I use Harry's for my iPhone. I use the GoPoint BT1 ODB-II reader. It's Bluetooth and Harry's picks it up with no issues.
I also bought an external mic and extension cable for my iPhone that I've been experimenting with for audio. I have the cable run through the back seat into the battery area in the trunk and through one of the drain plugs. I have the mic taped on the inside of the rear bumper out of the wind but it picks up a lot of road and tire noise, so I'll probably experiment with putting it on the back side of the bumper and see if that's better. GPS on the phone is ok enough. I can see how someone looking for detailed telemetry data would want to use an external GPS unit though.

![]() good stuff. summit point, always a local favorite too! That truly was a worry about getting a cheaper one. that's exactly what I was reading on the corvette forums. some would work, others not a chance. right now I'm leaning towards the MX one. its 79. may try and get it by this weekend. as for the mic, have you tried one of those windsock deallies? good to hear. I know I'll eventually upgrade to a standalone GPS. I'm guessing for myself, to go this route so I wont be waiting till the 7th gen comes out and theres finally a pdr upgrade with gm parts for the 6th gen

"as for the mic, have you tried one of those windsock deallies?"
I've used Harry's with the integrated mic on the iPhone and it does better with wind noise than I thought it would. The problem is that even if the wind isn't blowing on the mic itself, it's still picked up just from being so loud. It's acceptable for me, but I want better than that. I do have a windscreen on the mic under the bumper just in case. Plus, with the remote mic, it picks up the exhaust sound much more clearly. The good thing is that a simple setup of a Ram mount with a phone's integrated camera, mic and GPS will do pretty well with Harry's Lap Timer. All the extra goodies make it that much better.

I used Harry's but it seems to only sample as fast as the slowest horse, which is the phone gps(1hz)
I switched to racecrono, it does the timing. I use it with a 10 dollar elm127 bluetooth dongle from amazon and record video using my sony actioncan. When I get home I use racerender to put the video together It's not perfect but works decently |

Appreciate all the answers and suggestions.
Today was a wild day. A few days ago i ordered from scantool.net. they have a 10% coupons so it ended up being 71$ shipped. Today i got it, opened the box and did the install. It wouldnt work with the obdlink software, and nothing was registering with the harrys laptimer. Since i couldbt get it to connect via the android instructions i went through the settings for AN HOUR. I couldnt even attempt to download firmware, cause it wouldn't connect. The green light stayed solid, and the blue light was supposed to be blinking slow, was actually blinking way fast. Like a hamster heartbeat! Basically what it was supposed to do during the connecting phase. Well after 30 min of troubleshooting and resetting, resetting and troubleshooting i somehow was able to download new firmware. The firmware the obdlink dongle apparently had was 00.00.00. It updated to 430.000.00 or whatever is the newest. From that point everything worked as it should and the two led lights with the car and data transfer worked finally accordingly. So now i was able to monitor the parameters in the obdlink software, and harrys worked as well. I noted the rpm worked so that was a start. Now i have to figure out how to customize the overlays. Overall, good investment, and since i have the OBDLink MX on bt, im free to run gps via WiFi. Gonna do somw test runs with it tommorrow goin to cars and coffee. Highly appreciate all the advice and feedback from all here who posted!!
