Tramlining, under steer, hydroplaning, Why are we changing our tires?

I have a daily driver 2SS with stock wheels and tires. I am in need of new tires pretty soon. My main reason for wanting new tires now is hydroplaning. I measured 5/32" remaining on each tire, but the hydroplaning during some recent heavy rainfalls has been terrifying. I have been nearly dragged off the road a few times due to poor wet weather performance.

I am hesitating to buy new tires because I would also like to buy new wheels at the same time. Paying top dollar for only tires in the stock size seems like a wasted opportunity when I could also get new wheels, and then wider tires at the same time. However, I would like to discuss the pros/cons of the different options in tire sizing as it relates only to the Gen6.

So this leads me to having several questions for the folks with wide staggered setups and wider square setups. 285/305 seems to be what everyone goes with because... it's on the 1LE and ZL1 I suppose. Would something less extreme like 265/295 be better suited to daily driving? What about 285/285 or 275/275 square setups? Is anyone running this?

Square setups
  • Do you track only, or drive on the street?
  • Is there any benefit on the street for a square setup? You can rotate all the tires, tread life warranty doubles, less under steer? Any others?
  • What width did you choose?

Staggered Setups
  • What widths did you choose?
  • Is everyday street driving made difficult due to tramlining with larger front tires (285 etc.)?
  • Do you see excessive understeer?
  • Did you see an increase in acceleration or handling?
  • Does hydroplaning still exist with a larger 285 tire setup, despite the excellent performance of Conti EC Sport, Michelin PS4S etc.?

Im doing 19x10 275 square, as a track setup so I can rotate. I keep the OEM tires on the OEM wheels for street use, and will replace with OEM sizes and similar performance when its time.

Is the only reason for a square setup so you can rotate the tires? Did you find any other performance benefits compared to the staggered setup of the staggered widths?

Curious to know what tires and wheels you have or plan to use. Thanks.

Car is very understear biased for a RWD car it NEEDS wider front, I had no problem putting power down in the rear so no need to fix that, but yea 90% so I can rotate.

I have apex 19 x 10 +25, and z2 star spec 275/35/19. I have various spacers in case I want make adjustments.

I run a 285/35R19 square setup and the car is extremely neutral on track. I love this setup. I love that I can rotate the tires even more.

Are the Apex wheels hub centric?
I assume you are using 10 inch wheels?
Which tires you guys are using with them?

Ive looked at Apex a bunch when I had my 15 Mustang. Great wheels. I'm wanting a square setup for daily driving and occasional track days. Rotate for me means longer treadlife, not just throttle steering on track

I would say 285 squared MP4S's is what I would run in your situation. As mentioned the the square setup will allow you to rotate to extend the tread life. I think the MP4S's will be the best all around tire including having great wet traction!

There are a couple of us running them. Do a search in the wheel section for thread titles containing "Apex" and you'll get some good threads. I also have some on my IG account https://www.instagram.com/ericss_808/?hl=en
