Racing the ZL1
I don't care what the genre, be it road course, drag, autoX, TT, open wheel, heck...Rally it too! I am wondering how many people (and who) are taking the ZL1's out to the events. More than that, I am hoping to learn from any of those who are preparing their cars for their specific setup. Specifically: brakes, wheels, tires, roll bar, forced air, fire supression, seats etc, oh and BRAKES.
I can find 5th gen ZL1 stuff all day long but our cars are significantly different and I'm discovering the install is often different as is the part #'s. Same thing goes for 6th Gen 1LE's although it's a little more helpful. Additionally, where the heck are all the videos? I don't see any '17 ZL1 in the track segment of the forum. I know it's new and most are just now getting theirs but all I see are SS & 1LE's right now. Lots to learn from other's approach to driving this specific car. It is different than anything I've experienced. Let me check your style ![]() If you are tracking or plan to, please put your name here so I can follow you, if you do not mind. Perhaps we can all learn from each other. Did I mention brakes? Rob #287

Most of the country is still cold, snowy and rainy and these tires (same with 1LE) don't play well in low temps or inclement weather. You'll have to wait until spring/summer to see more videos. Just a fact of nature. There's not even that many of them out, in places where it's track weather and owned by people that will track them.

Yeah, good point on the videos but I'm hoping there are people spending every weekend they have in the snow, working on their cars to get them ready. All I'm doing is driving. Let's see what race mods are going on.

Unfortunately mine is stuck at the rail yard waiting for transport to dealer. Was hoping to get broken in by Apr 20 track day but no luck. Now planning for 5/4. We can't all be as lucky and living in Cali. I saw you had 80 degrees yesterday?

I need all the 411 on this stuff too...not only the car set up, but the necessary gear as well. Think I would get razzed wearing my motocross helmet?? Lol, I am at ground zero / ignorance on this track stuff, but looking forward to it. |

I'll be doing the drag strip and autocross. Planning to leave everything stock for quite a while though. Want to see how the A10 and rest of the car holds up before I void my warranty. 185 more miles before I open her up and see what she's got.

I've added the guys who are tracking (one way or another) to my contacts. I'd be interested in learning how you get things set up for your competition. Feel free to reach out to me as well. I can try to help out where I have first-hand experience.

I am going 285 19's square with Bridgestone RE71R's and lighter weight Forgelines Rims with different offsets front and rear. Hate to lose the millimeters on the rear, but I am going to start this car with AutoX until I am used to it, and the RE71R's keep me in stock AS.
Even on the track, I will probably stay with the 19's (since so much more race rubber selection), but go wider on the rear. I will also not use RE71R's on the track. They heat up too quickly (but great autox tire). I am going to try to get as much camber as I can initially without plates, etc.. that take me out of stock. Did full nose Xpel Film to protect somewhat from the tire marbles on the track. Will probably install a fire extinguisher because it is cool and adds some red accents to the car and you never know around the pits although I doubt it would be much use if I crashed.

I've done some autocross with mine and did a track day yesterday. This thing has amazing handling and cornering ability. Definitely do change the brake fluid, had a 6th gen SS out there boil the fluid and lose brakes not allowing more runs. I had mine changed to the Motul RBF600 and was able to make 7-20 minute sessions and still have adequate brakes by the end. Tires how well but definitely get eaten up, I started 30psi cold and were about 36-37 at track temps.
I have some PDR videos but out of town for work so will be a bit till I can post them. |
