Mercedes and BMW dropping some Coupes and Verts
http://www.4wheelsnews.com/auto/bmw-...rio-37012.html
Specialty cars are not selling well. Is the Camaro vert headed for oblivion?

I doubt the Camaro convertible is in any immediate danger. It's in a vastly different segment than a 6 or series or S class.
Plus BMW is notorious for trying to plug every conceivable niche in a market segment, regardless of how many buyers there might be in that niche. Killing off some of their no-selling model variants is the responsible thing to do, not a sign of the apocalypse.

Has more to do with BMW doubling the size of their model line up over the last decade, making every conceivable combination of size and body style. They make way too many models. Why does there need to be a 4-door 6 series? Why does there need to be both an X1 and a 550GT? Why does the X6 even exist? Haha

This is a sign that BMW and Mercedes just started making models for everything (look at the A-Class variants, for example$. The extra niche models certainly don't help the bottom line when they don't sell. Not going to affect models that actually do sell well.

Yes, both BMW and Mercedes need to prune their ranges. Back in 1981 Mercedes had a big sedan, a small sedan and the SL/SLC, that was it (apart from the 600 limousine that only dictators bought). BMW had just the 320i/528i/633CSi & 733i. No AMG, no M, in America at least. Less is more. ![]() The Camaro is in no danger. |
