Not impressed with any exhaust options out there
Gotta say that there is not one exhaust option out there that is in any way inspiring me to do an aftermarket exhaust. None sound good over video clips. These prices companies are charging are approaching what I used to pay for Audis. Not seeing the justification for a Camaro, espcially since I have the NPP. Not feeling this at all and really wanted something a little more aggressive and deeper with the valves closed and with a sound difference as noticeable to stock when the valves are opened but just not an orgy of loudness. I thought the Borla S was an option but after listening to more and more videos I'm just not feeling the $1700 feeling or hearing a transformative sound. For that price, it should be a refined, loud sound. I'm just hearing noise. If the goal is to just be louder, you don't need to spend $1,700. That's easy to do. Maybe I'm not the target market. But then those able and willing to shell out 2 grand with shipping and install are not a large number of people.

I may after the warranty is up, but any emissions modifications will cause problems that I don't care to deal with.

I do agree with you, the prices of exhaust and simple piping is atrocious. All it takes for a vendor to not have such a markup and then prices will fall.

So buy headers and xpipe only or go custom.
This sounds like a blog post

OP I agree, which is why I kept my NPP. I have not heard any exhaust that sounds as good as stock NPP. If only flaps open were a litte louder.
I have ARH LTs, cats, and pipes back to the the NPP catback. While flaps open is now LOUD the car sounded better stock. Don't do LTs for sound. If you want a noticably faster car do ported TB, Ported manifold, E-85, and tune. So easy to put the car back to stock when you sell it and the nice NPP sound will be a little louder and more aggressive.

Before you tag a bunch of exhaust manufacturers for creating products that you think aren't worth it, make a real comparison IN PERSON. Computer speakers/phone speakers are not showing you the true tone of the exhaust, just the sound. For example if you go on YouTube and watch a video of a guy shooting a 50 cal and then a glock 19 right after you wouldn't be able to tell me how the 50 cal was actually WAY louder sounding because on YouTube they sound pretty similar. But in person you can TOTALLY hear(and feel) the difference.
Same goes for the exhaust, hear and feel the difference for yourself. Find a local camaro meet and ask around. Borla was by far my favorite and the true ZERO drone it is simply amazing. Good luck! |

NPP for the win sounds great perfect for a mature driver. I find the loud exhaust I once loved annoying now or maybe it's the knuckle heads that just drive around reving there exhaust? Or maybe I'm getting old?
Who knows...

With headers you need to move a sensor which requires some work and tune. A tune will get you around emissions when the time comes.
You can't really tell the real sound from video clips. Trust me I have a car with headers and a cam and it doesn't sound the same no matter what I do so I don't even bother recording it. NPP does work well though to quiet it down. It's loud and sounds mean with headers. What you think is good vs. not good is all relative to the person too. All I care about is performance so I wouldn't shell out $17 for an exhaust, let alone $1700. The best is gliding up behind someone out walking their dog by dropping it into neutral so they don't hear you. I've literally scared more unsuspecting walkers with blips from tapping the stick with rev matching on than I can remember.

I did 2 comparison videos, one with secondary cats removed with NPP and one with Kooks headers installed with NPP (both times fuse was pulled). Both videos were taken in the same garage. In person the sound was extremely different, but the videos are disappointing bc they fail to show how much better the setup with headers is even with proper sound reproduction. Most phones and small video devices fail to capture the true dynamic range and frequency ranges of something like this. BTW the sound of the car now with headers is miles better and ear piercing when revved high ! You really have to hear it in person or make a best guess based on feedback. |
