I'm struggling with the extra $22k give or take for the ZL1. Is there a time of year that ZL1's would be heavily discounted? Probably need to wait for a used garage queen.

Once the year is over there could be some decent deals! Only thing is it's not going to be a huge numbers car so it might keep the price right up.

They start at 69 thousand here in Ontario new out of my range :(

Find a '16 2SS leftover that's brand new and then install a supercharger. I bought my 2SS 33% off brand new and after all the mods, supercharger & installation costs, I'm still $20K cheaper than a ZL1.

There's one right now listed for 57K in the ZL1 section. Now I think people are skeptical that everyone I will qualify for the discounts to get there, but my point is that I think they are already coming down in some places. I love my 50th, but if I could have had a ZL1 for 57k, I would have jumped and not looked back.

The market for a 50k+ Camaro I would think would be pretty small so if someone has one they want to sell you should be able to get a nice deal on it

Step 2 : Buy any one of the many SC kits available - $5-6,000
Step 3 : Get Methanol Injection $750
Step 4 : Get tuned and installed : $2500 (including cost of flasher)
Step 5 : 650 rwhp $48,250 - $49,250

edit : tax,tag etc on the 1LE probably adds 3-3.5k

I supercharged mine and love it, bigger supercharger then the zl1 (2.3 compared to 1.7) and much more room to grow and 20k cheaper.

If all you want is to be as fast or faster than a ZL1 without the total price, mod an SS. But the ZL1 is so much more than just a fast car. If you want all that the ZL1 offers, it is a great value and you won't match it by modding an SS for the same cost in my opinion.

That's definitely a great price range for a daily driver 650hp car. Now, the other things to think about are the quality of the install, the quality of the tune, and what happens when something goes wrong?

I guess, really it comes down to patience. I would guess that in about a year or so, a pristine '17 ZL1 will be available in the same ball park. In the market for cars like this, there are a lot of enthusiasts that change cars like they change socks. By waiting for this, you also get all the factory goodies that come with the ZL1, the coolers, the interior bits, and of course the remaining factory warranty. Also, the stock ZL1 will retain more value, especially trade in value, if you want something different in a couple of years. You might get a good price for a modded 1LE, but the market will be much smaller, and you will have to go through the pains of selling it yourself. Dealers will probably not want to touch it, or will at the very least, hold the mods against you on the value of the car.

I definitely agree with some of your points, but if you use the geico mechanical breakdown coverage you can essentially maintain a factory powertrain warranty on your 650 rwhp daily driver. The easier resale might be true, but if all you do is bolt on a supercharger with methanol injection, returning the car back to factory stock is pretty easy, and not sure about meth kits but the superchargers are probably going to hold their value pretty well sold used. As far as the goodies on the ZL1 you get a lot of these with the 1LE, you get the LSD, the coolers, the MRC, brake upgrades, you dont however, get the custom launch control, line lock and obviously the extra stability from the LT4 internals. From watching others push their LT1s though I think 650 rwhp is a pretty safe power goal for the stock LT1 in the long term.

I agree. The ZL1 is upgraded with larger wheels, tires, brakes and cooling. It can zoom around a road course with style. Put a blower on an SS and you can go to thee drag strip, but have a car with no warranty which will be difficult to get rid of when the time comes.

It depends on whether you want a killer sports car, or you prefer to hot rod a dragster.

Again this isn't entirely correct. If you get geico mechanical breakdown coverage on your modded car you can maintain a warranty on the OEM parts. And the 1LE has almost all of the features that make the ZL1 a good road course car.
