Harmonic Balancer removal/Install tool

I'm not sure if this is the right place for this or not. But for the guys who have had to remove / Install the balancer on the LT-1 which one did you use?

EDIT***

I picked up GM tool W89712 from Ebay and it worked perfectly with the use of the stock bolt as a spacer.

If you have a Installer tool that works on the LS motors it will work on these motors as well. I also picked up a ARP Crank bolt to replace the stock TTY bolt.

Look up the show "All Girl Garage" (or something close to that) on Velocity. They did a recent episode for a supercharger install on a 2016 SS. They covered the removal of the harmonic balancer including the tools they used. It took two of them and some serious grunt to break it loose.

I had to install the balancer twice as the one I received from Magnusson (Chevy part) was bad and I had to remove and reinstall the second one. I just pushed the balancer onto the crank and kept pushing on all four quadrants until I could install the original used bolt , then I just tightened the bolt up to 240 ft.lbs. The directions tell you to remove the original bolt then install the new bolt to 111 ft.lbs. then backoff 360 degrees, then tighten to 59 ft.lbs. and then torque for another 124 degrees.

I hope I don't get a bad pulley. I actually got the stock one off using a puller popular in the LS crowd and it appears my "Home made" LS installer tool will work on the LT-1 Motor.

The torque specs I have is 37ft lbs and then tighten 140 degrees for the stock bolt. I picked up a ARP bolt to use instead it calls for 238ft lbs.

The torque specs I quoted are for the '16/'17 Camaro supercharger balancer pulley, i.e. ZL1 and the Cadillac V motors. Your torque specs are for the stock '16 SS V8 engine IIRC.

hmm... I'm getting the Tq spec's straight from the Magnuson install manual.

I actually had a typo with the ARP bolt as it's list the tq spec @ 238 ft lbs not 258, it's also listed for LS7/Gen III /LT1 nothing indicating LT4 so I will have to make sure it will work.

That's interesting as I am quoting from the install manual for the Magnusson Supercharger for the 2016 LT1 Camaro that I received and it says: "Once the pulley has been fully seated with the pulley installer tool, install the old crank bolt that was removed from the original pulley and torque this bolt to 240 ft-lbs. Now remove this bolt and discard. Install the new crank pulley bolt to the following GM specifications. First torque the new bolt to 111ft-lbs, then loosen the bolt 360 degrees. Now torque the bolt to 59 ft-lbs. Then tighten an additional 125 degrees using a torque angle meter.
This is the procedure I followed.

WOW THEY Revised the manual!!!! I have the one dated 3/16 and it appears they revised it in January 2017.

What else is fascinating is I got my kit Feb 2017 so it should of included the revised manual.

I will say this though it doesn't surprise me because there are things on the version I have that don't match the car work like socket sizes and unnecessary steps to achieve the same goal (Bumper removal). So I will have to read the newer manual and see what else changed steps 116-118 are completely different between the two.

Thanks for the info.

Also LT1 & LT4 OEM Crank bolts are the same according to a GM Dealer for anyone following this thread. Same part number 11547372 (M16 x 2 x 1.03) so the ARP one I have should work.

Did you have any issues meeting the .094 - .0176 crank depth spec's?

I'm at .342 and the pulley doesn't seem like it wants to go on anymore then that

My crank depth spec landed up being .212. I checked the alignment of the pulleys with a square and the alignment is perfect so I let it go at that. The Magnuson manual shows a square edge whereas the pulley has a small 1/16" chamfer on it. I always keep checking the alignment of the pulleys on any cars that I have installed a supercharger on.........no problems yet.

Good to know I'm not crazy! I put and pull that thing on 3 different times getting close to the same specs each time.
