Well, thought I'd give this a shot too. So, looking to swap my ZL1 silver brakes for your Red set. I know, mine say ZL1 and the 1LE say just that. But if your game, I am too. Same deal, local Ventura CA area. I have all the tools nessasary to do the swap. PM me if interested.

ZL1 has 15.35" rotor Vs 14.6" for the 1LE

I don't expect the calipers to swap without the rotors... they'll psychically bolt, but with the larger rotor I would expect the caliper height to be different.

Rotors need to be changed to, otherwise the calipers won't fit one way or the other.

Furthermore: DON'T DO THIS!!

If you're in love with the red color, put the car up on jacks for a week or two and get them powder coated.

The 1LE brakes are a significant reduction in surface area and braking ability from the ZL1 equipment. Obviously, this means reduced braking performance...but also reduced temperature resistance, increased wear, and potentially improper ABS integration.

I normally would NEVER question your knowledge of all things Camaro, but I really thought the six piston Brembos on the ZL1 and 1LE were the same caliper and used the same brake pads? Just the color of the calipers were different, red = 1LE and silver = ZL1. THe brake rotors like you state are much larger on the ZL1.

I'm 99.9% certain they are different sizes. Bolt pattern is undoubtedly the same. But these are much bigger to accommodate a much larger rotor and pads.

Here's an overlay I created real quick in Photoshop. I scaled everything as identically as I could 20" = 20" (wheel), and then cut some things apart. You can see in the lower image what the 1LE caliper looks like "on top of" a ZL1 version.

front rotors on 1LE 14.6", ZL1 15.4" if I recall correctly. It's perceived that it was slightly larger to account for the extra 150lbs the ZL1 carries around. Primarily from the weight of the supercharger and supporting components.

Usually any given caliper has a max rotor diameters it can accommodate, due to the curve of its design. From the pictures alone it appears the pads are different, with the ZL1 rotor and pad having greater swept area.

Ideally for the 1LE guys, we could buy the caliper bracket, rotor disc, and pads and upgrade to ZL1 spec. If they're indeed different calipers then it would be much more expensive to swap.

The overlay is going to be off since the ZL1 has slightly larger rotors, so it's caliper is a little further out.

As for the calipers, I thought I read somewhere on here they were the same minus color, but the design itself almost looks a little different in those pics. Pad shape too...

But, who know as those may very well be preproduction cars?

With how good the SS 1LE brakes are, not sure if any of that would be worth it? Maybe just the larger rotors IF they were a direct swap.

Righty-o. Come springtime when we start getting on-track and figuring out what the weak points are, then we'll cross the bridge of whether the 14.6" setup is good enough.

I'm aware the overlay is not a perfect representation. The telltale, as you mentioned is that the calipers are cast a bit different. If you look close, I also believe the ends of the caliper give away that they are different.

The rotor size difference is dramatic, I just can't imagine piston placement in any one of the calipers can effectively transfer force into pads and onto both sized rotors effectively (regardless of placement).

If there's a documented mention that the calipers are the same part, I'd love to read it. I like to keep as up to date as possible on things like that.

For the record....I responded initially because the OP was asking about swapping. If 1LE owners want to upgrade, go for it....but for a ZL1 owner to reduce brake size for color (as in the OP)....not good.

Agreed. OP would be best off just painting or otherwise refinishing his calipers to achieve the desired aesthetic.
