Upcoming Decision Tires/Wheels
Looking for some help and first hand knowledge from the Track and AutoX guys. I'm not a novice at either so don't give me the learn the car on the stock tires bs first. Plus this Callaway SS can spin the stock tires at almost 60mph on the street so it needs better rubber just for normal driving....
Ok my new Callaway SS needs some new meats for this upcoming season and these are the 2/3 options I am considering. 1. My original intention has always been to buy MRR 1LE replicas and throw on the 1LE/ZL1 rubber of 285/30R20 & 305/30R20 Goodyear Supercar 3s. 2. Recently been thinking about not purchasing wheels and just running the Bridgestone Potenza RE71Rs in 255/40R20 and 285/35R20. 3. If I could purchase a lightly used set of OEM 1LE wheels and tires I would gladly. Just missed out on the last set here on the forum. Plans are roughly to run at least 4 HPDEs, 8 or so AutoXs, and 1 roll race event at Pocono Raceway. I've read mixed reviews about the RE71Rs road course ablility, but from what I've read they are hands down the best AutoX tire. Anybody have first hand experience to fill me in on? Basically not buying the MRRs will allow for another full set of RE71Rs to burn up, but if they will burn up twice as fast as the Supercar 3s and not perform better because of the smaller sizes then the cost savings becomes a moot point. Also have to consider the sale of the stock wheels and tires at probably around $800-$1000 which seems to be the going rate and drops the cost difference even more. I do love the looks of the 1LE wheels so that is my preference in the looks department, but I don't dislike my stock black SS wheels so I don't need to change the look if it's not going to be worth it. Hopefully I explained myself enough here and you guys can give me some real world input. The best ending to this thread would be if somebody sells me their OEM 1LE stuff!

I've run the RE-71Rs for 1 track day at Laguna Seca on my '15 1LE. They grip really well but wear fast. You can't really have both.

I have run Dunlop ZII SS, RE71R, NT05 and NT01 on track.
The NT01s were the best track tire, the RE71s the worst. They are the best AutoX tire, but they cannot handle heat. They get hot, they get greasy and seem to dissolve between sessions. I wasn't expecting much from the NT05, but I was pleasantly surprised by their dry grip and durability. They are also 'cheap'. Discount Tire's eBay store has some really good sales from time to time.

I got the same feedback from friends at the track that RE71 is only for autoX.
I would also throw into the mix 255/285 Ventus RS3. I'm exactly with the same dilemma : keep the stock rims or get a new dedicated set.

The RE71's seem to be THE tire for last years AutoX. While I have no experience with them at your sizes, they gained approximately a 2 second advantage (60 sec course) over Michelin Sport Cup 2's which had a tread wear of 180 verses the RE71's 200. With that tread wear, they should have been worse than the Michelin's. They were much, much better. They had the further advantage of being a stock class compatible tire verses the Michelin's which now move you to R class. This helped with PAX. They felt like almost like a cheater tire, running better than some 80 tread wear tires I had used in the past. Again - great autoX tire. They heat up quickly which is good for autoX. Heard not so great for track for reasons others listed above.

Good info guys! I had read a few other reviews that said they got too greasy for the track. I'll most likely be going with the Goodyears.

Anybody know what seems to be the best 19" option for tires and rims for around the same sub $3000 price?

I run LG 5th Gen 1LE/ZL1 replicas. I have 315s in the back (6mm spacer needed) and 285s up front. The handling was transformed with this move. Also, do NOT get the eagle supercar g2s. They are excellent in corners but they leave a lot to be desired on acceleration in a SC car. Good luck, OP!!
