Video: 2017 Camaro ZL1 vs. Hellcat Challenger roll race

Feedback from the folks who ran the race:

1. We only had a manual Hellcat available. We tried to find a local HC with manual but didn't get any takers. So we just ran with what we had, auto vs manual.

2. Stock ZL1 manual vs HC auto = ZL1 loss every time. I do think that the ZL1 auto runs even with or slightly edges the HC auto. I am sure we will see this race from one of the magazines soon as they will get a ZL1 auto before the public does.

3. We could have run them from a dig but I believe that there would have been a lot more haters crying about the results from one side or the other. A side by side dig race would have been even harder as reaction time would have factored in. The roll on race tells the story as both cars would have issues hooking up from a dig on street tires with full air pressure.

4. I own the ZL1 and really am impressed with the overall car. The ZL1 is a sports car whereas the HC is a big living room couch with a jet engine. Both are very fast and fun to drive. HC super comfy cruiser but the size and weight are significant. ZL1 feels tight, light, balanced but it does feel smaller.

5. ZL1 seats are comfortable and supportive. I like the shifter a lot. Car sounds good, not as loud as the Gen5 ZL1. Brakes are great.

6. Would like to get ZL1 on road course. It will be way faster than HC on road course. It may give the GT350 a hard time on a road course. But don't expect ZL1 to beat GT350 by much, if it does win on a road course. GT350 is true road race weapon even with less power.

7. Overall, what other car offers this much power, performance, practicality for the money? It runs very close to the Z06 Corvette from a roll, has 4 seats and a trunk. If Cadillac offered a CTS-V 2-door coupe it would be this car but it would cost $100k. Its a tremendous bang for the buck and looks great, especially in the front.

8. Expect to see approx. 100 rwhp gains with tune, intake, pulley and headers for around $5k worth of parts. At this power level, the all-in performance value becomes unmatched.

The Camaro team has outdone themselves with the new ZL1. It's a world-class sports car.

Based on that, I would agree with him that if they both have an automatic, or both have a manual it's too close to say one is faster than the other. I can't see buying one over the other for straight-line speed.

The ZL1 kills it in handling, the Challenger would make a great daily driver as it's a comfortable car and probably easier to drive in traffic because I would think is easier to see out of. I've driven a Hellcat, but not a new Camaro.

Unless you're gonna track the car (road race) I don't think there would be a wrong choice.

Shouldve said the hellcat was an auto before wasting 3.5 mins of my time lol

I don't think the ZL1s weight advantage really offsets the power advantage in the hellcat.

Looks like the Hellcat got the victory on that day, on that track.

Where did you learn this? Do you put your hands up or text the guy in the other car before doing a run? You run what you have.

Motor Trend quoted Al O as calling the ZL1 "the triple threat". Track car, drag car and street car. The ZL1 isn't going to "beat" the Hellcat but will be on par. A great measure of the Camaro teams goal would be a three way head 2 head with the HC and GT350R. Will be right there with both

Again with the roll racing it's cool to watch but line em up already. It's said over and over that hellcat's a straight line car let's see a dig race.

Compare apples to apples bud. The A10 will have an advantage over the M6 hands down. It will give the HC more of a run for its straight line value with their A8..

Once someone does a proper apple Apple test I'll read it ...

If you are racing at the track yes. If you are doing a comparison test no.

Ok people. Those were fun runs. If you took that as a comparo then I guess to each their own. There is no A10 out there on the streets right now.

Forget it. I'm going Christmas shopping.

Meh, the zl1 will be the slowest among these two (gt500, hellcat).
Hellcat will gain some hp in 2018, sooo....
a10 won't help.

Guys. You need to take this for what it is. I'd expect an A8 HC to win against a M6 from a roll. The Z only dropped during shift. Things look very good for an A10 from a dig.

Triple threat. It's not going to dominate a HC or a GT350R but it will be right there with both
