If you park your car outside, just put your keys in one of these Faraday bag when you get home (or work)...

Every car is programmed differently to pick up on different frequencies with it's remote censors. This article is using a broad brush to paint over every car out there.

Only thing we as consumers can do is protect our investment / passion / asset / the best way we can, ensure we have proper insurance coverage and hope the manufacturers address and recall cars with a potential loophole in their codes. As the saying goes, worrying will make you an old man so do the exact opposite fellow car lovers.

A thief with the "Mystery Device" can pick up your signal when you walk out into a parking lot. They just park a van in the middle of a mall parking lot with the device inside, and video the cars for which they pick up the signal. Then they just try to find where the car is parked later on. Or, if they can get away with it, they unlock the car while you are gone and go through the console and glovebox for a piece of mail or registration document with an address on it. This is the reason that Colorado started giving you two registration documents - one to keep in your car, that does not have an address on it, and one to use when you need a registration document with an address on it.

What I don't care for in the story is that they have no proof its ever happened or how often. I'm not convinced car thieves would be this sophisticated.

For example, we had a '95 Civic that could be driven away with zero damage simply by unscrewing 2 Philips head screws holding the bottom of the steering column on, then the two holding the key insert to the ignition switch and then simply turning the switch.

I could do it in less than two minutes but I'm sure the 2x thieves did it they couldn't be bothered to use the screwdriver as anything but a pry bar. If they'd taken a moment to think it through they could have simply unscrewed the key insert, replaced it with a ~$45 replacement including keys from Honda and been all set.

When my stuff has gotten stolen or broken into all signs point to drug addicts looking for something to joy ride in and then contents to quickly pawn.

If they ever got their hands on a "mystery device" it, too, would end up sitting down at the pawn shop.

The vast majority wouldn't, but some would. Especially if its fast and draws little attention.

The Today show simulated it happening, last week. I'll see if I can find a link and post it.

As old school as it may sound just buy a CLUB for the steering wheel and when they get in the car and can't turn it that would be that if your worried about it....

I think his point was about actual car thieves doing it to steal cars, not 'white hat hackers' proving it can be done.

You can defeat a club with a hacksaw in less than 5 seconds. Since most steering wheels no longer have metal in them, you just cut that. Then pull the club out of the way.

Saw it on TV years ago.
