I'll be getting my 2ss delivered soon and was considering a hard break in as opposed to by the book. I've always broken in my motorcycles with a hard break in and they've always ran great with little oil consumption. So let me know what you guys have done with your new cars.

Bought mine with almost 30 miles on the odometer, you know it had a hard break in. Compliments of the dealership.

I break in all of the motors I build in a methodical way that people would consider "hard" but they always seal right up and don't burn oil. I broke in my 16' the same way but I don't think I would do it that way again. I forgot that the trans and rear also need a break in and those two types of break ins contradict the way I break in motors. I would never just go light into a new trans (clutch if you are M6) and definitely not a new rear end.

I would also never break a motor in with synthetic oil. Joe Gibbs for the first two oil changes up to 500 miles and dinosaur oil up to 2,500. Then synthetic. These cars come straight from the factory with synthetic in them. I am not sure how much "breaking in" of the motor happens any more. I have a feeling the motor is what it is when we get it. If you look at GM's methodology and compare that to rear end company's break in instructions they are pretty similar.

I am not saying that there is anything wrong with my car now but I would follow GM's instructions next time. That is just me though.

the guide doesn't say to baby the throttle, it does also say to avoid constant same speed driving

I will be doing a moderately hard break in, following the guide's actual words

the day I pick up my 2ss I will be taking it on at least 50 mile run, hopefully closer to 100 miles, I'll find an appropriate gear for the road I'm on (most of it will be 70mph limit) and taking the car from 1800rpm to 4000rpm with smooth but deliberate throttle to WOT - obviously I will need to find quiet enough sections of road where I don't have people right up my backside so that on the slow back down I don't get run in to

the break in guide says to avoid WOT from a standstill and to avoid slamming the anchors on, but it doesn't say to baby the throttle, smooth and deliberately using WOT is a recommended part of break in as you need to have load on the motor to break it in

Break them in like you plan to drive it. If you drive spirited and like to use the giggle pedal then that's how to break it in. Ive done that on all my cars and bikes. Ive always had good luck. If its going to break its going to break if not then it wont. IMO manufacturers want you to baby stuff keep it held together past warranty then it can drink oil etc not thier issue.

The question this raises to me is... Can the dealership mechanics review the car history from the computer to see if the car was being broken in hard? Would this void your warranty?

Perhaps a similarly difficult decision is about the oil to be used during break-in. The only available dexos certified oils are synthetic and semi-synthetic. I think the car comes with semi-syn. If you read the mototune site a couple posts up, and other conventional wisdom, it is generally suggested to break-in the engine on dino oil then switch to synthetic once the break-in is done. That doesnt appear to be possible while abiding by the dexos requirement.

I followed a mix of the book and what the guys who've had this motor longer in the c7 Vettes are doing. I mixed up the speeds, drove it fairly aggressive but never wot and never over 4k rpm. Never used cruise control. Changed oil at 500 and 1500. Changed the rear end oil at 1500 as well.

Sitting at 3600 now, no strange sounds, no oil consumption. Does it matter? Who knows lol

Do not put a conventional oil in the engine or you will void the warranty. This is a modern mass produced engine. Not one hand built at a speed shop. Conventional break in methods do not apply.

You have to remember the GM recommended break in period is for the entire powertrain; not just the motor. The break in period for the 5th Gen Z was hotly debated; but I followed it until 1,500 miles, disconnected the battery and let it fly. Bone stock it dyno'd 511 rwhp fully heat soaked. 22K miles later it runs strong, has good oil pressure and doesn't burn oil.

I seriously doubt it - the breakin is recommended, not mandatory.
