Navigation and Apple Car Play

I'm looking to buy a 2017 Camaro, and I refused the navigation because I'm going to be using Apple CarPlay. The dealer then informs me I will not be able to use Maps on my IPhone through Apple Car Play because the car won't have the navigation add on.

Did he tell me a load of bull, or do I need to buy the navigation add on in order to use Apple CarPlay Maps?

Told you a load of bull, I have a 1SS no nav and use Android CarPlay for my navigation needs. You don't need the factory nav to do it.

I also use Android Auto with no navigation. It works great. Get the maps on the screen and it is totally functional.

I have found that live traffic coming through google maps is better than the Garmen or the on board navigation I have in my Colorado. You also do not have to subscribe to Sirius radio to get the live traffic function to work (to the tune of $30.month).

You can basically think of Apple Carplay as something similar to 'mirroring' of your phone screen.
Factory nav has absolutely nothing to do with Apple Carplay.
Another typical BS from a dealer, spitting out false info.

This.

Call them out on it and see what they say. Then leave and find a better dealership that won't outright lie to you.

To be a bit more fair most sales people don't know the whole story about any of the cars they sell. I know this should be different as this is their job but there are a lot of models and features will vary.

The interesting part for me is that this seems to transcend all dealers. We enthusiasts will almost always know more about the cars we're looking at regardless of model/brand. I have yet to meet a sales person that could tell me more about any vehicle that I was pricing out or features available.

This is sad but true.

Yeah but they're supposed to be experts or be willing to look up the facts if they don't know.

I used to be in electronics and appliance sales years ago. I prided myself on knowing EVERYTHING about EVERYTHING I sold. I read the owners manuals when we got a new model in, even the service manuals. Knowing every feature, spec, and difference between trim levels and options was important to me because it helped me inform the customer better.

To me that is the expectation I have for every salesperson. If they don't know everything about everything they sell, get out of the business.

Yup... it's there job to get their happy asses in early on a day a new model arrives and get familiar with it. I would.

Actually if you have a heads up display, your directions won't show up there unless you use Nav. I think your dealer meant this and just screwed up.

+1.
This is the kind of commitment I expect.

Hmm, never thought of this one. A good possibility.

I'm pretty sure this it. I've got nav and heads up display, and use it for directions just for this feature alone. When I first got the car I tested the Apple Maps and it's great, but nothing popped up on my heads up display.

Shows up when you use Onstar Turn by Turn even if you don't have Nav also, I believe...

I'd tend to agree. I don't see much incentive for him to try to sell the NAV. It's a $500 add on and though it's something extra my guess is whether you get it or not isn't going to make or break them from a profit/commission standpoint. My salesman actually told me I didn't need it but I ended up getting it anyway.

As for the salesmen knowing the product I totally agree that they should but most of the time a car salesman isn't doing it for the love of cars, it's just a job. And since more times than not they can sell cars just fine without having to know much they probably don't care to learn.

Salespeople like Becky are the exception and not the rule.
