Navigation without OnStar
I'm pretty close to ordering my Camaro. Going with a 6spd 2SS W/ mag ride and NPP.
I'm still debating on getting the nav though. Mainly because I've been getting some mixed messages on what ONSTAR adds to it. My dealer claims that without Onstar, I will not get traffic information with my nav, and I will not get Nav on my hud. All my research has led me to believe that this dealer is wrong, but I wanted to ask people that actually have this system as I often find dealers are misinformed about this kind of stuff. Thanks in advance. Last edited by bielawg; 09-21-2016 at 09:43 PM. |

I am not sure about the real time traffic alerts but the integration of the NAV with the HUD has nothing to do with Onstar. You also get the speed limit for the road your are on posted in the DIC. It pulls this from the NAV database.

Get the Nav. It's fast and one of the best integrated Nav systems out there.

Traffic reports shown in the nav unit are from XM. They will go away when your trial ends (unless you re-up).

OK, I don't actually have my car yet so I can't say from 1st hand experience - but I've been considering it too so been doing some asking around & listening and this is what I've got so far: you can get "navigating" help through OnStar as one of their services if you ask for them for help to get from point A to point B but that is totally separate from the "NAV" option that may come installed on your car if you choose. The traffic/speed limits/gas station info is a perk of the NAV option but, I was told that it pulls that all or part of that info (as well as the weather) from information supplied by Sirius/XM (as long as those channels are part of your subscription plan - ie, you are paying for them).
Does this sound right, owners? |

Android Auto makes the "nav" system that comes with the car pointless.

One more time… I have not had OnStar activated in my car for four months. I still have real-time traffic alert, and I have NAV in my HUD.

Just wondering. Is your XM subscription still active? I have had built in NAV in my last 4 GM vehicles and the traffic reports always go away when the XM trial runs out and I don't subscribe. Have never used OnStar nav even though it is free with the trial.
