Help me understand the difference in the power

So I've been at a loss for explaining this since I got my 2017. For all intents and purposes, through everything I've thrown at it, my 6th gen outperforms my 5th gen.

It's faster in the quarter mile, it has more power, etc.. The big difference is the weight and the 8 speed auto now versus my 6 speed auto in my 5th.

At the same time, the 6th gen FEELS slower. I know it's faster. I've proven time and time again it's faster. But my 5th just felt brutal, with the exhaust, long tubes, tune, and all that stuff. It was just absolutely brutal feeling in every way.

The 6th gen feels tame, almost docile. It'll pull me into the seat, but it's smooth while doing it, whereas my 5th gen would try to give you whiplash every time you left a light even remotely faster than average.

It feels like a sports car, not the brutal muscle cars I've grown up with. Everything from big lumpy cams to a blower throwing the horsepower and torque through the roof.

Is this simply because of the gearing and the transmission? Or are there other factors at play here that I'm not looking into?

You said it yourself, your other car had headers. It's the noise placebo.

...and that A8. It's changing gears much more.

+100000. I thought I was the only one. I know my 6th is faster but it doesn't feel as violent. It's a smooth power though. You look down and your going tripple digit speeds without knowing it.

This is my point exactly. It's just so..tame. Even when my 5th gen was stock it just FELT more brutal.

You guys have the A8..it shifts fast and smooth.. jump into an M6, that 1-2, 2-3 shift is violent as shit, pulls you hard in your seat.

If you been around luxury fast cars, they don't feel like you're going fast but you are. The tranny shifts fast and smooth.

I drove a 5th Gen 1LE.. It's night and day brother. But then again, these are all manuals. I only test drove an A8 and didn't push it since it was a test drive and I wanted to be mindful. The M6 feels brute, just have to know how to keep it in the powerband.

You could try a throttle controller. I use the Vitesse. It makes a huge difference in feel in my opinion. I run mine at SP5, it seems most people like SP6 on theirs. The car is a lot more fun to drive with it.

Well, it would appear that GM succeeded in it's mission for advancement and refinement of the car.

+1. Took my best friend for a joyride. Went out to the back roads and did a short 100mph run from a dig. He equated the shifts to a large man in the back seat punching him in the back of the head several times. My wife has told me a couple times that I need to warn her before I get heavy footed so she's ready...I still get in trouble every now and then with my spontaneous mashing of the gas pedal.

I haven't driven an A8, only got to sit in one at the dealer, so I don't know how they feel in comparison, but I would imagine quite a bit 'smoother' on the shifts. I do, however, still catch myself very much speeding when I'm just rowing through gears on the highway. If this car had the same exhaust my 4th gen did, I would very much know how fast I'm going, and hear very little of what's going on with the radio or conversation in the car

Glad to hear it! Once you're used to it it's hard to go back, too. It makes the OEM throttle feel like you're pressing a sponge. I found the Vitesse a little jerky in 1st/2nd gear sometimes when faced with heavy traffic and having to lift off the throttle (I have a manual car, though - auto might be less of an issue) and to fix that I just press the A button (for eco mode - left in EC0 so it's basically OEM) until the road clears up, and then hit B (at SP5 for me) to get back to joy time.

Such a great little product!

I made my wife cry once with the 15 LS3. I promised her that I'd never go WOT with her in the car again. LOL. Now with the 16 LT1 A8, I can hammer the throttle and she has no problem. Our 15 on a cool day at the track was at best 13.2@108 and our 16 is 11.9@114 on the same track.

It's all about the torque delivery. When you have this much torque that low, it just doesn't have that same feel to it as something that pulls harder and harder as the RPM rises.
