Did you change your tire/wheel setup for the track/AX?

Please share your thoughts

I have an extra set of OEM wheels that I put on Hankook RS3s on. I just put them on for track days, and put the other set (with OEM tires) for street driving.

If I can start over, I'll probably go with 18" aftermarket wheels (like TSW) - I didn't go that route simply because I didn't have enough information when my track season was starting.

When I invested in a set of Falken RT615's for a 626 in STS (a little over 10 years ago), I swapped between those and the regular street tires until the Falkens had heat-cycled down to around normal summer tire grip.

The Mustang gets bigger and lower profile rubber on wider wheels for the track time than it does for the street time as long as the events aren't bunched together with only a week or two in between. Both sets are MPSS. Since I have to remove the tires to bleed the brakes before each event, it's not too much added burden to do the swap thing and it takes most of the risk of getting a track tire flat in street driving out of the picture.

In both cases, even if I did the swap at home and drove to the event on the track tires I've always brought at least two street tires/wheels along. That way I'm at least not mismatched on an axle if I cord or flatten a tire or have some other incident at the event that requires the use of a spare.

I was thinking about 18" as well, however I cannot pin down the correct tire size (to prevent balance / diameter problems)

Is anyone running a set of 18s with ss brakes...or better yet the 6 pistons?

One thing I can tell you is that very few 18" wheels will work with a 15" brake package - it takes a non-sloping inside face to the barrel plus the usual Brembo spoke clearance considerations to work. I'm assuming that the Camaro's 6-piston Brembo setup uses 15" rotors, same as the Mustang GT/PP (which Vorshlag has worked out exactly one 18" wheel fitment for - Forgestar's CF5).

18" wheels with 14" x 4 piston Brembos is almost a no-brainer, should only have the Brembo spoke clearance issue needing to be addressed. Aftermarket wheel designs that list a 2007 - 2011-ish GT500 fitment will have a much better chance of working than wheel designs that don't (I know the offsets would be a little different, and you'd still want to contact the wheel mfr to be sure). Forgestar F14's and the CF5's are both supposed to fit these.

I haven't been able to find enough information on the Camaro rear brakes to determine if those would possibly control wheel diameter rather than the 14" x 4 piston fronts.

I'm afraid that's the best I can do for now :(

I will be changing to flow forged 19s, stock width, to stay in FS for autocross. Will probably use square 275/35r19s RE-71Rs like rotis. A bit stretched on an 8.5 width wheel, but a good 15% wider contact patch up front than stock. It should save about 10-12lbs per corner/ unsprung weight, although wheel circumference will be off by 5%.

Currently running Forgestars wrapped with 285 and 305 Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2's. Got some CCW's on the way in 18's that I'll be putting Hoosiers on. I run the 6-piston setup and have been assured that they will clear.

I orderd 19x10 MRR flowforged FS02's.

They're grinding the backspacing down and custom painting them. Can't remember what we did on offset. Should be here this week.

Going with michelin pilot super sports.

Will post pics, assuming it comes out ok :-)

Appreciate the explanation. I guess I'll be looking at some 19'S bare minimum for track tires and maybe street as well.

Now it's to decide do I drop 300 per wheel or 600 per?
