Excessive acceleration ticket?

In a separate thread NoSoupForYou posted about Excessive Acceleration Tickets - I had never heard of this, but googling shows this does exist. Has anyone else here gotten one? I'm not sure in Maryland if it is a violation - I could only find penalties for inducing a skid, doing a burnout, and excessive noise.

A friend of mine got a ticket for Exibition of Speed just for revving at a stop sign. He drove off like a grandma, but the cop got him for that. I thoughts thats where excessive noise fell, i didnt know they can also tag you for excessive acceleration just for revving high. The 'chops will get you for anything nowadays i guess.

Here in Topeka they call it displayed acceleration. Evidently here in Topeka acceleration is a private thing and must not be exposed.

Bullshit ticket IMO. Seems to me if the speed limit is 50 or whatever and the road in front of you is clear, than you can do 50. Regardless if it takes you 100 feet or 5 feet, so long as you aren't blowing the tires off and fishtailing to get it done. lol

i got pulled over and got a warning once. i always thought, "well ill just accelrate quickly to 55 mph." but appraently that is also against the law... :(.lame. the cop was cool though, it was in a built 96 z28. take note i wasnt burning out or anything, i had street drags on it. i took off like a bat out of hell just to speed limit though. lol

I got one when I was young and the officer called it a "jack-rabbit start".

I agree. But that doesn't change the fact they can nail you for it.

Don't pay it if it's worth your time to go before the judge. I would.

What one cop calls excessive another might not call it exesive speed. No stardard in my opinion.

Seems very subjective - not sure what criteria would be used to find someone in violation. It's not like the cops would actually be measuring your acceleration. Also not sure what the purpose would be, other than perhaps to prevent street racing; but what if you're by yourself?

I can't see where they should give you a ticket if you haven't exceeded the speed limit, didn't burn the tires, swerve or cross lanes, etc. I got a warning a couple months ago for speeding 55 in a 40 and I was quite sure the officer would. When I got home, I checked my dash cam and I wasn't doing 55 but I was speeding. I honestly think he was bored and just wanted to check the Camaro out.

Got me down here in Louisiana, Exhibition of speed.
Went to court, paid $125 and didn't go on my record.

Unsafe speed, not to be confused with speeding as they are completely different, is the number one cause for accidents from insurance studies. Just because the speed limit is 50 doesn't mean you can slam that lead foot down until you reach that speed.

You can get ticketed for timing lights as it is considered reckless driving. You can also be ticketed for driving too fast in the rain even if you are going at or just under the speed limit.

There are a lot of these grey areas where cops can pull you over and ticket you based on judgement of if they feel you are endangering others on the road.

Remember it's a speed limit...just because your heart has a max rate of 170-180 doesn't mean you should sprint everywhere you go to keep it there right?

I had a buddy that got one for excessive acceleration, exact wording on the ticket. Supposedly falls under careless and imprudent driving statute.

I recall getting stopped by a cop after my vehicle demonstrated an extreme lateral movement accompanied by a violent demonstration of wheel rotation followed by an exorbitant volume of combustible rubber sediment expelled into the atmosphere in the form of a noxious vapor cloud.

Who would have known burning out was illegal?
