Post 1LE Production Numbers - Low Again?

While we wait for more 1LE news let's talk about production numbers...

Quote:
In total, the 2014 Camaro 1LE production run totaled 2,468 units, with 2,271 staying in the United States and 197 ending up in Canada.
So the 6th Gen 1LE seems to occupy a very niche space. This gen is such a great all-around car already I really don't see many people seeking it out, especially with how so many people opt for the automatic.

My prediction is numbers will be low again, maybe even a lot lower, and GM won't consider a 2SS 1LE.

Thoughts or guesses?

The Gen Five 1LE package had a siffer ride...thankfully, this scared a bunch of people away that were just interested in the looks.

The Gen Six 1LE package will be more expensive...reducing the number of interested people.

...I think you're spot on...

I think its likely to be lower. Only because I doubt many people will know much about the 1LE. People will know all about the ZL1 but only true fans will research the 1LE. Not many people will care about vast improvement over the standard SS handling since it would take a closed course and a decent driver to push it hard enough to really use the additional capabilities.

A typical John Doe who is looking for a good handling sports car isn't likely to even think twice about a Camaro, unless he has done a little research on the car. It might take the entire life span of this 6th gen to really change the stereotype of the Camaro not being much of a handling car.

This also could be as simple as whether or not GM advertises the 1LE well enough for the general public to learn about it. I bet more people will know about the Fifty Anniversary Car than the 1LE.

It will be low also due to not too many dealers ordering them for their lots. The vast majority of Camaro buyers don't special order their cars. So, if it's on the lot, they aren't going to buy it...I bet 75% of 1LE sales, if not higher, will be special orders...

I think it will be around the same production numbers even with the higher price point and it all boils down to MRC.

People can say they drove the 5th gen 1LE daily but that ride scared off a lot of potential customers. Adding in MRC will make the car a much easier to live with vehicle just because it wont be bouncing and dancing around on concrete.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the 1LE is not a model right? It's an options package for an SS. Kinda like counting production numbers for a 2SS with mag ride and 6 piston break upgrade (no I'm not saying thats what makes a 1LE) I just get the feeling some people are counting these cars as an actual separate model.

Some people are because of the reputation it's earned. But you're right, it's not a "model"; rather an optional performance package.

Nevertheless, you can keep track of the number of SSs with the 1LE package equipped.

I kinda get it. I just don't think most people see it in the same special light we do. I think I've only ever met 3 or 4 people that actually knew what my car was and two of them had gen 5 Camaros lol.

It's funny you say that, because I have gotten the same comment twice in the past month by strangers on the road:

"Is that a 1LE?!"

...But we've done so much to the car since I bought it, the only things that would give away it's 1LE heritage would be the wheels.

I believe GM mentioned at the launch of 1LE that they intend to sell more of 1LE this time around. I too believe the number is going to be higher. Also, the idea behind adding a few key upgrades from 2SS to 1SS 1LE would be more than sufficient for some to consider the 1LE over the 2SS. I also believe 1LE and 2SS will be priced the same. That puts the 1LE package at $5K.

While I agree the mag ride will help, the stiffer springs, sway bars, bushings and lower profile tires will still add a noticeably firmer ride than the standard SS.

I had a 2013 2SS 1LE and in the 3 years I owned in it south Florida I only saw two others on the road and rarely saw one in dealer inventory when I would take it in for oil changes.

It is a track package. I mainly bought it because I knew the great value it represented but honestly I never tracked it or planned to track it. I had one of those loaded 2SS 1LEs with NPP, NAV and even the sunroof. The big thing that caught my eye when I bought it was the how much more aggressive it looked with the black ZL1 rims and wider tires, front splitter and red brake calipers than a standard Gen5 SS. I knew for $3500 msrp the wheels alone were worth that to me.

Now that the new SS is lighter, better handling, MRC, much improved interior, etc. I didn't feel I need the 1LE this time around, so I spent the extra money on 2SS goodies.

The ride in the GEN 1LE is definitely something you need to get used to. It is not bone jarring but it does bounce you around but the benefit is that you feel very planted going down the road and when you turn in it is extremely sharp. I am curious to see how well the MRC can help with Gen6 1LE ride. It works great on the new SS but it definitely is not as sharp as the Gen5 1LE but way more than I can utilize on the street. I see how the lap times for a GEN5 1LE are about the same as a GEN6 SS with MRC. You are able to push the GEN5 1LE further to the limit in the turns since it is designed to inspire confidence there. The new SS get through the turns quick to but what it lacks on the turn it makes up for it in the straights with more power and less weight. I can see how they will be able to shave off 3 seconds with the new 1LE just keep it light and get it through the turns even faster with wider tires, stiffer springs and sways, that E-Diff tech and brake later with 6 piston calipers.

These are some things from experience I could have done without.

- The hood wrap. Cool at first but just adds extra maintenance to keep it looking nice. Only useful if you really track and need the glare reduction. Some guys just peel it off instead of re-wrapping it.

- Alcantara on the steering wheel and shifter. Again, cool at first but then it gets dirty and matted down so quickly and just becomes another maintenance item over time. Blotting with damp rags, then fluff with the right brushes, etc.

- Goodyear F1 Supercar tires - These tires are awesome...for the track. For daily driving they are pretty rough. They are so sticky they throw rocks and pebbles up all the time. In the wet they are scary and in the cold they are even scarier because they can crack. Also, you will be lucky to get 10-12k miles out of them. Always get some heat in them before you put your foot in it since when cold it is like you are on ice. A lot of Gen 5 1LE owners would swap them out for the Michelins PSS when the time came. You give up some track performance but get much better mileage and a better ride for daily driving.

Anyway, looking forward to the new GEN6 1LE and hearing members impressions of the car.
