Who changes their own oil?
And rotates their own tires.....
I see the stupidest posts about checking your oil after paying somebody to do it. Question is: your age? and: do you maintain your own car? Betcha it is a millennial issue...... ![]()

Sometimes people take their cars into the shop because 1.) they get free changes, 2.) they like to have documented service records, as well as countless other reasons
The camaro has staggered tires, so the rotating question is a bit odd. I won't disclose my age because it is irrelevant to whether or not a person services their own car.

I am a millennial.. and I dont do my oil changes.. one because I dont have the right tools, two... the first 2 oil changes are free..so why not take advantage...
Hope this helps you drive to more 'legit' conclusions.

You can still document your own service to your car on GM's website (linked to their onstar site). I keep receipts and document as needed for the things I can do myself.
33 and I've been doing it since I started driving. I have a genetic disposition to not trusting mechanics I dont know personally. |

I plan on having the first few done for me since they are free. After that, however, I will start doing them on my own. Just cuz I wanna.

I get free oil changes for the next 3 years, plus it's documented at the dealer for warranty issues.
I've always changed my own, but I've never had a car that had a warranty before. I'm 36 BTW. I will be taking it in, but I will definitely double check the dealer's work. Whiskey |

I change my own oil on both my cars because it is much cheaper than taking it someplace. Also, I don't have a problem getting under my car to do the work. I can't do a tune up or swap out heads or rebuild a transmission but what I can do I will do myself.

I have never paid for an oil change in a vehicle I own, and that has been a lot of vehicles over a long period of time.
When I was growing up, my dad had his own small construction business. He did all of his own maintenance and repairs on his trucks and equipment. Helping him is where I learned how to spin a wrench. And learned (the hard way) to make sure the gasket comes off with the old filter! (no damage, just a mess) Every time I change my oil, it takes me back to those days of lying under trucks with my dad, handing him tools, and asking a lot of questions. I learned a lot, but mostly I learned to just dive in. It's often not as hard as you think. After restoring a few old corvettes, I felt confident in my last project - a hemi conversion in a current gen jeep wrangler. When people ask where I had it done, I tell them I did it myself. They seem truly amazed. But hey, its just nuts, bolts, a shit ton of electrical connections and a little cutting and welding. Really was easier than I thought it was going to be. |

Gen X'er here that does all the routine maintenance until recently. Met two young guys that opened a nice little business named "Two Bros Quick Lube" near my work. I like to help out these young entrepreneurs by bringing in my LS 30 oil and K&N filter, they change and recycle the oil for me for $20.

Teach 'em early. My Dad taught me. I've always done my own oil changes. I laugh when people come running over if I have my hood open to check oil level in my old truck, like I'm broke down or something. Most people don't even check their fluids anymore. I love hearing guys pay several hundred just for a brake job, I'm saving so much money. I'm 42.

38. Always did my own routine service and most repairs.
When I was younger, supporting a family of 5 in my early 20's, I did the repairs on our cars because I couldn't afford to take them to a mechanic. I love working on cars, but it was also a necessity to troubleshoot and figure it out. Spent lots of time online searching for info and looking at service manuals when things broke. I learned a ton along the way. Now, I'm grateful for those challenges, actually. |

I was taught to always change my own oil. Do it yourself and you know it's done right. I wasn't even allowed to get my license until I could do that, change and rotate my tires, do my own brakes(pads, rotors, calipers), basically everything I could do myself. I could do more to a car than most of the guys I knew by the time I was 14. It just isn't like that anymore, forget changing their own oil, most don't even know how to CHECK their oil.
We get a good laugh almost daily with some of the things people come in for. There has been a few times I literally had to turn around and walk away to keep from bursting out laughing listening to a customer "tell" us what the problem with their car is. |
