Waze coming to Android Auto!

I am looking forward to this!

http://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/android-auto-waze/

and this tidbit at the end of the article

Finally, if you're sick of plugging in your phone (and if it has a really robust battery), Android Auto will now work wirelessly over Wi-Fi -- in compatible cars, at least.

Curious what the wireless over wifi is going to entail...obviously it would be hardware related, interesting though.

You raise an interesting point. Our Camaros start off as a WiFi hot spot, with some kind of OnStar account promotion that includes 3 months or 3 GB or whatever. If you don't pay to continue internet access, are you not still left with WiFi capability that simply only gets as far as the local (car) network?

Hotspot hardware technically shouldn't have anything to do with onstar or the data plan, only it currently wouldn't have any functionality without the data plan as there is nothing else to do on the wifi network then.

Then again, the mic has nothing to do with onstar either and that's tied into it so.... yay for synthetically enforcing a dependency on an unrelated product.

Devices will still connect to the SSID/Network from the OnStar Access Point in the car, but the actual internet service via cell data is not active...kind of like if you leave your wireless router plugged in and connected at home but you cancel your home internet service, device will still connect and show connected, but you will not get internet access.

I am interested to see if the OnStar WIFI would be sufficient enough and work with AA, not sure how they will work it out and what the tech specs will be.

Someone needs to connect their phone to the car with app that will measure link speed. Need to see what type of protocol it is using. Single band N should be enough to drive it based on how AA works.

Good idea...I would think it is at least N, probably decent specs on the AP.

So, Waze isn't compatible with AA yet?
Once it becomes available, I might consider ditching my iPhone for an Android phone just to use this feature.
