Lets discuss drop in high flow air filters

I know... I know....

There is no shortage of information online regarding the efficacy and necessity of a high flow drop in air filter.

With that said, I am put off by the CAI manufacturers issues with a whistle sound and the honest confusion about power gains, if any.

What are the arguments, either for or against, purchasing a high flow air filter for <$50 and enjoying the sound and greater air flow when compared to spending >$300 for CAI systems.

I bought the Mishimoto....For Me 2 things....looks/sound, and leaning out some of the stock richness!
My SS will be the new daily driver and I'm more into keeping my Warranty and improving MPG by any miniscule amount!

Question - Does leaning out the richness take away the snap crackle and pop of the exhaust when you let off the gas?

So would a CAI be snake oil as well?

Its the same filter in essence... the piping a little different, thats all.

No, the box and airhorn, including the piping is different. Those are not insignificant differences. Even the materials they're made of can be different. Those can all translate in to differences in air flow on top of any filter changes. The CAI can even relocate the MAF which will further compound the issue. (for better or worse)

Though, in modern times on cars like this, I don't see too much gain from filter change only unless the one coming out was clogged.

I believe C7Z gets a huge benefit because C7 and C7Z (at least 1st year) used the same intake box, but we're talking an N/A to FI there.

I prefer good filtration vs higher flow, I'll buy the OEM GM intake if they release it if it shows anything good.

I do not want any issues with warranty so my 1LE will not be seeing 3rd party aftermarket parts

Actually it add's to it. With my CAI in now...its snap crackles and pops a bit more now. The same go for my bikes. The idle jet on my harley is a little undersized and it pops and cracks off throttle. Same for my BMW boxers, which run lean by factory mapping.

Sometimes that is a combo effect of richness and backpressure...On all My DD cars, I normally would also get a full exhaust and tune with the CAI....since I am also getting a ZL1, this car will not get any other additions!
It'll be in next week...same with the Mishimoto, so I'll let you know!
